ra. Ladd comes from a long line of furniture builders. His grandfather (Elmer) was a woodworker for Sligh Furniture in Holland Michigan. Elmer's brother was also an upholsterer. Ladd's father taught him woodworking at an early age. He still has the camp box (Ladd is an Eagle Scout) his father helped him build when he was a teen. It comes as no surprise, once you see Ladd's work that meticulous craftsmanship is in his heritage. Thirty years ago Ladd and Rose moved to Hickory NC where Ladd found employment as an apprentice upholsterer learning from the ground up. He started working at Hickory Chair and Hickory Business Furniture building fancy leather covered, executive furniture. Later he worked for Century Furniture on their chair and sofa line. While Ladd was honing his skills in upholstery Rose finished her education at Lenoir Rhyne University earning her BA in business management. And they both took classed at Catawba Valley Community College the premier furniture school in the United States. Furniture is Ladd and Rose's passion and when they're not hiking, camping or jogging along the beach they are in their shop designing beautiful pieces of furniture for their customers and their BOUTIQUE. Ladd and Rose opened their first upholstery business in Charleston, SC in 1988. One year later Hurricane Hugo destroyed their shop. Ladd and Rose with a positive attitude soon had their shop rebuilt and their business was thriving again upholstering antiques for the mansions along Battery Row and The Old Village in Mt Pleasant. In 1999 Ladd and Rose decided to move back to Florida to be closer to relatives and property they owned near Live Oak. They settled near Gainesville (goooo Gaters) and built their business servicing Alachua and Columbia Counties. This 30-year history has made LADD UPHOLSTERY DESIGNS sought after by designers, decorators and homeowners alike. Ladd has become an expert in restoring upholstered furniture and specializing in antiques. His craftsmanship is unmatched but what makes them truly unique is Rose's service, which is second to none.
