Hillsboro Flower Co., owned and run by Emily, is a microflower farm in northern Virginia (western Loudoun County) that specializes in elegant, garden-style cut flowers for customer's homes as well as for florists. These flowers are just the right gorgeous types to br

ighten a home office, work space, or to be used in high-quality events. Our four main products this year will be Subscriptions, à la carte Event Florals, DIY buckets, and Wholesale to florists. This isn’t a bug account, promise.

But just LOOK at this praying mantis - can you tell what’s special about it??

It’s smaller than you might expect, probably only 4” long. Her head is a little more square than triangular. And the giveaway a her wings don’t cover her whole abdomen. Croptop wings.

It’s the NATIVE species of mantis!! The Carolina mantis. They easily get outcompeted by the invasive versions, so the latter is usually who you see.

This is yet another example of how and why growing without pesticides is such a fascinating boon for the garden. Just like that yellow garden spider, I’m so honored to have this naive mantis call HFC home.

I also promise that your bouquets won’t accidentally have praying mantis in them 😆. You can’t have her. I’m keeping her!

Please - if you see this today, the last Sunday in August - come get your weekly flowers from Olive. You won’t regret it.

These are the kind of roadside stand flowers to DM your friends about. Harvested early this morning, conditioned in a cooler, created with color theory and formal design techniques in mind, and delivered by foot to the Old Stone School in Hillsboro.

Just turn at the round about into the Old Stone School and you’ll find Olive, our self-serve flower stand stocked with fresh flowers tonight and again on Friday for the Fruits of the Gap evening market during the free concert.
