Tonight's dinner was inspired by YouTube... but not the way might think.

Teddy's been watching restaurant ranking videos lately, which has piqued his curiosity about food from restaurants we typically avoid. Earlier this week, he mentioned wanting to try chicken from Popeye's, so I suggested we look up the ingredients together. What we found included a few forms of MSG, many types of sugar, and low-quality oils. After we talked about the ingredients and what better choices might be, he said, "Well, might as well make our own!"

So we did!

We made buttermilk fried chicken, homemade fries and air fried asparagus (my choice, not his), accompanied by his signature sweet & spicy pineapple sauce. I cooked the chicken and fries, and he took on the sauce and plating.

In keeping with the inspiration, we made sure to discuss our ratings in each category: plating (23/30), flavors (24/30), and overall ex*****on (24/30).

Making our own fried chicken and fries was nowhere near as convenient as the Popeye's drive-thru, but that was the point. Meals like this take time to make and are a special treat for that reason. This particular meal took most of the day to plan, shop, and cook, but memories were made and lessons were learned during all of those experiences.

"I made applesauce at school today. Can we make some at home? I can teach you!"

These types of requests are rare from my kids, so I jump at the chance to say, "Of course we can!"

This was an exciting opportunity because not only did we get to cook together, but he got to be the expert and TEACH me. My sweet first grader told me which ingredients we needed and how much. We gathered all the tools we'd need, then he showed me each step to make applesauce. The only part he didn't remember was the temperature to cook it at, so we looked it up together.

I got to soak up some 1:1 time with my kiddo who's always on the go, and he got to be the boss. He was so proud of his applesauce, too!

As of this month, Family Recipe, LLC is closing its "doors" so that I can lean in further to my role as Hot Lunch Director at FHLCS.
When I accepted the role last August, I was unsure of how things would play out with Family Recipe but was hopeful that I'd still be able to teach classes on breaks and in the summer. That still is an eventual goal, but for now, my breaks are needed for rest and enjoying my family.

I'll still be here, sharing tidbits from the school kitchen and of the Ysunza family's recipe for a happy, nourished life, but it'll just be for fun for the foreseeable future.

Thank you for all your support as my little business has grown over the past 4 years! The connections I've made, virtually and in-person, are invaluable and truly cherished. I hope you'll stick around!

Pretty sure my team and I leveled up in Lunchlady Land today!

Over the last two weeks, we roasted pumpkins (), hunted down ingredients, and scoured recipes. I learned how to quickly thaw and break down whole, 20lb turkeys for faster cook time, pivoted about 47 times as obstacles arose (mostly with said turkeys), and met my goal to make 90% or more of this meal from scratch and 100% allergy-friendly... for 72 people!

My whole body is tired, but my heart is full.

Cheers to .to.wellness and the rest of the kitchen crew for helping make this mighty meal possible! Lots of happy kids and parent volunteers today 😊

Here's to 35!!

I have spent most of my life feeling like I was rushing to catch up to my peers, but thanks to a tremendous amount of inner work, I can officially say that the hustle is over.

I confidently know who I am, I feel good about what I'm doing in my life, and I'm blessed beyond all measure for the people who are along for the ride beside me.

I've always loved birthdays, but this feels better than most. This year, I'm especially enjoying the growth I'm able to feel within myself- like a perpetual gift, 35 years in the making. Feels really good.

In an effort to share what I love most about Oregon- our amazing agriculture- with the students at Forest Hills, I'll be introducing a featured in-season ingredient in each month's menu.

🍅🍅 October's featured ingredient is... TOMATOES!! 🍅🍅

Last week, Eddie picked 110 lbs of tomatoes for the school kitchen at . Today, we got to work chopping, roasting, blending, and stewing all that end-of-summer goodness to freeze an keep on-hand for the October menu! I'm already looking forward to Tuesday's Roasted Tomato Soup & Grilled Cheese Sandwiches. 😋

In case you need to be reminded...

Our worth is not measured by:
🥕Pants size
🥕Numbers on a scale
🥕Calories eaten/ skipped
🥕Macro/ micro nutrients
🥕How many reps we did
🥕How many times we worked out
🥕Dollars in our bank account

If those details above leave you feeling obsessed, frustrated, defeated, worthless, etc., it's time to reconnect with the beautifully unique qualities that make you, YOU.

Let's be positive role models for our future, friends. Criticizing our bodies routinely teaches our children to do the same.

Let's, instead, teach them to honor the amazing things our bodies do ever single day.

Let's teach them to run because it's exhilarating, eat because food is delicious and nurturing, and to challenge themselves because it's empowering.

🥕🥕Come work with me!🥕🥕

Local foodie friends, please spread the word: I'm in need of an assistant to get the hot lunch program at FHLCS up and running again. The school was not able to offer hot lunch last year since the previous Hot Lunch Director moved away, but we're excited to be bringing it back for the 2022-23 school year!!

This is a really cool opportunity to make and serve homemade, nutrient-dense food for a loving school community! 🥬🥑🧄🥦

Food Handlers card required and kitchen experience is appreciated as we will be cooking food from scratch daily.

Must be RELIABLE and able to maintain positive rapport with students and staff.

Please contact Kimberly Brennan, Principal, at [email protected] for an application. For additional information, please call the school at (503) 359-4853.

🥕🥕JUST CALL ME LUNCHLADY🥕🥕

The big job update I've hinted at is here!

At the start of the 2022-23 school year, I'll be taking over as the official head of the lunch program at my kiddos' school!

It's a big job full of exciting opportunities to share my knowledge as a Culinary Nutrition Expert through food and education while allowing me to stay close to my kids. (All major priorities!!)

Family Recipe will still be around, though I'm sure posts will be less frequent, especially through the fall.

As of now, I'm planning to continue workshops/ class series during school breaks and summer and will be available for consultations during those times, too. That all is subject to change, of course, as I get a better feel for this new role.

If allowed, I hope to share my journey as a school lunchlady here on the gram (and fb)... and you can be sure my SLOPPY, SLOPPY JOES won't be coming from a can (or yesterday's meatloaf). 😘

What a lovely evening watching the film, "Life is Fruity," and enjoying delicious noodle bowls topped with locally grown veggies!

Eating good food is one thing, but SHARING food builds community by revealing stories of culture and experiences. It presents opportunities to learn from one another.

Thank you to .cardoon & Umi Organic for the opportunity!

Back in May, my 4-year-old brought home this little cup of grass he had planted at school. He watered it for a few days, then eventually forgot about it.

It's been sitting on the windowsill, dried and yellow as can be ever since.

Two days ago, I noticed him carefully carrying his grass from the sink. I asked what he was doing, and he excitedly told me he had watered his grass so it would grow again.

Later, Eddie and I chuckled at his sweet innocence because surely the grass was dead and not coming back.

This morning, Elijah excitedly ran to the window to show Eddie his thoughtful work. Eddie started to remind him that the grass was likely dead, but when we looked, sure enough, there were little green sprouts shooting out of the cup!

Our little gardener had no reason to think it wouldn't grow (other than the comments from his jaded parents 🙊), so he watered it... AND IT GREW!

With such ease, our child put his energy into creating the result he wanted instead of staying stuck with the result he had, and it WORKED.

Sometimes we get bogged down with the ways ideas can go wrong, and we don't even try. When that happens, we might skip out on potential failures, but we also miss out on chances to see our ideas come to life!!

We need to water the grass if we want it to grow!

🥕🥕 I'm taking this reminder to heart as I weigh a BIG job decision. More on that to come! 🥕🥕
