π Tomorrow, May 20, is World Bee Day β and honestly, May might just be the most important month of the year for the natural world. Let us explain! πΈ
Bees pollinate roughly 75% of the worldβs flowering plants and are essential to our food supply. But habitat loss, pesticides, and a lack of forage are putting them at serious risk.
At Monadnock Green Shop, we carry a couple of our favorite bee-friendly finds:
π» Pollinator seeds β grow native flowers that give bees and other pollinators a place to feed and thrive, right in your own yard or windowsill
π― Beeswax wraps β a beautiful, plastic-free alternative to cling wrap. Better for your kitchen, better for the planet, and one less piece of plastic ending up where bees (and all of us) donβt want it
πΏ A note on No Mow May: we get it β a long lawn can feel untidy. But if you can resist the mow (or even just leave your flowerbeds and leaf piles undisturbed this month), youβre giving bees, beetles, and ground-nesting insects a crucial early-season home. That βmessyβ corner of your yard? Itβs actually doing a lot of good.
And to close out the month β May 22 is the International Day for Biological Diversity. Bees are just one thread in an incredibly complex web of life. Every seed planted, every patch of lawn left wild, every piece of plastic swapped out β it all adds up to a world with more room for everything living in it.
