Pattern theft is a real concern for creators. Here's how I protect my patterns:
I create my patterns and save them as a PDF. That's how I add interactive checkboxes for users.
When I save my pattern, I click Menu>Protection>Security Properties
Change the security method to "Password"
Under "Permissions" click the box to restrict editing and printing. Then, change the levels of permissions you want your customers to be able to access.
Make sure the box to enable copying of text is unchecked. This prevents someone from copying your pattern and pasting it into a new document. It protects copying your photos for a photo tutorial as well.
Enter a password to make sure nobody can make changes or copy your PDF without your permission.
Set compatibility to the earliest version available (this way customers with all software versions can open the pattern).
Click "OKAY" to apply settings!
Although it won't be impossible to steal your patterns, this makes it much more difficult. Larger creators can also invest in copyright insurance to make sure they have recourse if someone steals their digital property.
Stealing patterns and posting them as your own is theft! Always respect the inherent rights of a creator and credit them when you use photos or post pictures of things you made with their patterns. It builds trust with your community and it's just the decent thing to do.
