The Primary Bedroom at the Timber Frame Project (swipe to see the before images!)

There is a covered porch off this room that blocks most of the natural light, and the dark green walls weren’t doing the space any favors. Overall, I wanted to soften the room and let the wood sing a bit more.

The almost-blush wall color, along with bringing in velvet and linen furniture instead of more dark wood, really allowed the architecture of the room to shine.

Even the rounded edges of the bed, nightstands, and lamps were intentional. Timber frame homes have a lot of strong, straight lines, and bringing in softer silhouettes helps balance those out.

I also removed the heavy window treatments and replaced them with motorized Roman shades, which have become a favorite of my clients.

And of course, a little charm with vintage art and decor, as always!

Living in New England, and growing up in a timber home myself, I feel like these wood homes just find me. And most of my clients have the same complaint: “It’s just so dark in here.”

The temptation is usually to paint everything white, but my advice is:

1. Dark isn’t bad. Sometimes you just have to lean into the mood. Instead of fighting it, let’s make it cozy and cool.
2. Pattern is your friend and wallpaper looks fantastic against wood. A pattern with movement will draw your eye around the space and actually make it feel bigger.
3. Textiles are crucial: Things like rugs, window treatments, and even tablecloths do wonders for softening all the wood.

You don’t have to fight the wood. You just need to give it something beautiful to play against.

The first time I ever saw a plate rack it was on the side of the road.

I was taking my daily walk around Spofford Lake when I spotted this big slatted piece of furniture at the end of someone’s driveway with a “FREE” sign on it. I didn’t even know what it was, but naturally, I hid it behind some bushes and ran home to get my minivan.

(I used to be a runner, and people sometimes ask if I still run these days. My answer is yes, but only for free stuff on the side of the road 🤣)

I came back to load up my mysterious piece of furniture and that’s when I realized it was a plate rack with storage underneath. I had absolutely nowhere to put it in my kitchen, but I did have a big empty wall in the bathroom right next to it. So I painted it, hung it there, and filled it with extra dishes.

Is a bathroom a weird spot for a plate rack? Absolutely. But it’s incredibly functional, and honestly, I think every house needs a little weird 😉

All of that to say I’ve been slightly obsessed with plate racks ever since. And this green one in my Timber Frame Project was no exception.

(And if you’re my neighbor who got rid of a plate rack several years ago, thank you!! 😅)

Really excited to start sharing images from the Timber Frame Project! This cozy spot is on the third floor of an incredible timber frame home tucked into the Massachusetts woods. Custom shelving, colorful furnishings, a lacquered table, and dramatic lighting brought so much life and energy to what was once a dark, unused corner. Now it’s become a favorite gathering spot for the family to sit, relax, and work on puzzles together.
