Let's talk about pressing for a minute. Not ironing. **Pressing.**

There’s a difference, and it matters more than people think.

When we iron clothes, we usually slide the iron back and forth. But with quilt blocks, that sliding motion can stretch fabric, especially on bias edges. Pressing is gentler: you lift the iron, set it down, let the heat do its job, then lift again.

It’s not the flashiest part of quilting, I know. Nobody runs into the shop saying, “Show me your most exciting pressing techniques!” 😂

But good pressing can make your blocks look cleaner, your seams behave better, and your quilt top lay flatter.

A few friendly reminders from the cutting table:

- Press, don’t shove the iron around.
- Let the heat and steam do the work.
- Check from the front to make sure there aren’t tiny folds hiding near the seam.
- Press as you go, not just at the end when the whole quilt top has turned into a fabric lasagna.

It’s one of those small steps that makes a big difference.

So tell me, are you a press-every-seam-as-you-go quilter, or do you save it all up and have one big ironing-board marathon?

Michigan Shop Hop Friends this is for YOU!

We’re adding some extra hours for the hop and wanted to make sure you had them for planning your route. We’ll also be open a few days that some shops may not be, so keep that in mind while you’re planning.

If you’ve never stopped in before, we’d be happy to have you. Pop in, look around, ask questions, dig through fabric, and stay as long as you like. We love seeing new faces, and of course we love seeing our regulars too.

Happy Hopping, and we hope to see you!

Sometimes "Sew and Tell" is more than just what we created in our sewing room. Sometimes it's cleaning up the space, picking out new fabric we are so excited about, a new pattern we found that is going to eventually turn into something amazing, and sometimes has nothing to do with sewing at all. I just wanted to make sure everyone knew that this is really about checking in with each other and the community we have built on our page. We're jsut happy you are here

The little strawberry attached to an old school tomato pincushion is not just decoration.

It is traditionally filled with emery, which is a gritty material used to help clean and sharpen pins and needles.

Before sewing supplies were as easy to replace as they are now, people took better care of the small tools they had. A sharp needle mattered. A smooth pin mattered. If a pin was rough, rusty, or dragging through fabric, it could snag the cloth or make sewing harder than it needed to be.

So that tiny strawberry had a real job.

A quick tip for quilters: if a pin does not slide smoothly through your fabric, do not keep forcing it. Try cleaning it, sharpen it if you have an emery, or retire it. Good fabric deserves good tools.

Sometimes the smallest sewing notions have the best stories.

Do you still have a tomato pincushion in your sewing room, or are you team magnetic pin dish?

We’ve always had our sales in-store, but heard feedback from our customers that they wanted them online. So, we did just that.

We put two lines on sale until June 6th! Copacetic and Effervescence are both on sale, and I want to spend a little time showing you the fabrics we have from each line, the same way we’ve been doing with our full collection features.

It is easy to miss a print when you only see one listing at a time, so we’ll be sharing more of the individual fabrics, how they work together, and what kinds of projects they would be good for.

Copacetic by Julia Frazier for Riley Blake Designs has that bright retro feel with florals, gingham, fruit-inspired colors, and playful coordinating prints.

Effervescence by Sue Daley Designs for Riley Blake Designs is bold, colorful, and full of movement. The circles, squiggles, and geometric prints are great for modern quilts, bindings, borders, bags, quilt backs, and projects that need a little extra energy.

Both lines are currently marked down in the sale section of the Etsy shop.

Following Monday’s post about how fabric collections are designed to work together, Le Petit Escargot by Lori Woods for Poppie Cotton is a great example of that balance.

This collection has a soft, storybook feel with playful snail prints, florals, and smaller coordinating designs. The novelty prints add charm, while the smaller prints help keep a project balanced and easy to use.

Good project ideas for this collection:
- Baby quilts
- Nursery quilts
- Spring or garden-themed quilts
- Table runners
- Pillows
- Quilted bags
- Zipper pouches
- Handmade gifts
- Fussy cutting
- Borders, binding, and accent blocks

Helpful buying tips:
- Choose one or two favorite prints as the main focus of your project.
- Use the smaller florals and coordinating prints to balance busier fabrics.
- The softer prints can be used for sashing, binding, backgrounds, or stash building.
- You do not need to use the full collection in one project. These fabrics can also mix well with other soft florals, garden prints, and gentle pastels.

Le Petit Escargot is a sweet, versatile collection for quilters who enjoy soft color, playful detail, and fabrics that feel easy to build a project around.

If you’ve noticed lately, I’ve been sharing entire fabric lines instead of just individual bolts. Most people don’t realize fabric collections are designed a lot like a recipe. Every print has a purpose.

The larger, eye-catching fabrics are usually called “hero” prints. Those are the bold florals, detailed artwork, or fun novelty prints that grab your attention first.
Then designers mix in smaller prints and blender fabrics to balance everything out and keep a quilt from feeling too busy. Honestly, blender fabrics are usually the unsung heroes of a quilt. 😂

After awhile, you start recognizing designers by their style:
- Moda collections often have that soft, timeless cozy feel
- Lori Holt leans vintage-inspired and sweet
- Riley Blake is known for bright, cheerful, approachable collections that are easy to work with

You don’t have to stay within one fabric line. Some of the most beautiful quilts come from mixing collections together. The key is paying attention to color, scale, and overall mood.

Next time you’re picking fabrics, step back and look at the whole collection together instead of one bolt at a time. You’ll start noticing how intentional fabric design really is, and choosing fabrics gets a whole lot easier.
