George Ohr did not want a vase to look perfectly behaved.

Working in Biloxi, Mississippi, the self-described “Mad Potter of Biloxi” became known for pushing wheel-thrown clay into unusually thin, folded, pinched, and twisted forms. His most experimental work helped separate his pottery from the more conventional decorative wares of the late 19th century.

After a fire destroyed his studio in 1894, Ohr entered one of the most inventive periods of his career. Between roughly 1895 and 1903, he produced vessels with exaggerated curves, compressed bodies, rippling rims, and deliberate distortions that made the clay itself part of the subject.

That approach is what makes this piece worth a closer look.

The hand-thrown vase uses twisting and manipulation rather than strict symmetry, turning a familiar vessel shape into something more sculptural. The signed and dated example reflects the individuality Ohr actively pursued—he wanted each pot to have its own character rather than follow a repeated formula.

Ohr’s work was largely rediscovered decades after his death, and today his ceramics are represented in major museum collections and recognized as an unusually forward-looking chapter in American art pottery.

This signed and dated George Edgar Ohr twisted hand-thrown art pottery vase is featured in Lion and Unicorn’s August 23rd auction, Lot 325.

Long before the art world caught up, George Ohr was creating some of the most daring ceramics in American history.

Fluid forms. Impossible twists. Unmistakable originality.

An exceptional Ohr vase is coming to auction soon. Collectors won't want to miss this one.

George E. Ohr (American)
1898-1910
