The spot right at a doorway takes it from both sides. Two rooms worth of foot traffic cross that same few inches, all day, every day.

It shows up as a dark patch that does not match the carpet on either side of it, and vacuuming alone never touches it because the soil is already worked down into the pile.

A boat interior is a carpet cleaning job with nowhere to plug in and no room to swing a wand.

So the machine comes down the dock on wheels. Water in, dirty water out, and none of it goes over the side.

Stairs carry more traffic per square foot than any floor in a house. Every trip up and down lands on the same few inches of each tread.

So the front edge darkens first, and bodyweight grinds it in. A vacuum lifts the loose dust off the top and leaves the rest sitting down in the pile where it does the staining.

Look at the tread noses on the left, then the same noses on the right.

Pale linen shows everything. Arms and seat edges go a shade darker than the rest of the frame, and it happens slowly enough that nobody catches the day it started.

That colour is body oil and hand contact, not a stain in the usual sense. It sits on the weave rather than soaking through it, which is exactly why it lifts.

The cushion on the right came off the same sectional an hour later.

Nobody photographs their mattress. It is the one surface in the house that gets used every single night and inspected almost never.

This one had a set-in ring that had gone through the cover and dried. Protectors and toppers hide that kind of mark, they do not remove it, so it sits there for years getting deeper.

Extraction pulls it up through the same fibres it soaked into. Second photo is the same bed the same afternoon, still faintly damp.

This floor had years of spotting worked down into the pile. Most of it was never permanent, it was soil sitting in the fibre waiting for hot water and enough suction to lift it out.

The strokes across the second photo are the pile standing back up.

The spots in the first photo had been there long enough to look permanent. Most of that is surface soil sitting in the pile, and it still lifts a year or two later.

The upstairs landing is the strip of carpet nobody thinks about. Everyone uses it all day, in shoes and in bare feet.

It darkens a shade at a time. You stop seeing it until the day you move a laundry basket and find the original colour hiding underneath.

Microfiber hides how much it is holding until you look along the seam. That darker line down the cushion is body oil, skin and everyday dust, pressed in a little further every time someone sits down.

It builds up slowly across years of ordinary use, so there is never one day where it looks wrong to the person sitting on it.

We pre spray the cushion first, let the solution break down the oil, then pull it back out with the wand. The lower photo was taken while the fabric was still damp, which is why the wand strokes show.
