"The Lamb of God" Wax Medallion blessed by Pope Pius IX.
A beautifully preserved 19th-century European Christian reliquary, a sacred devotional object designed to house and honor holy relics. Key Features & Design Elements Central Medallion: The focal point is a central oval plaque, frequently an Agnus Dei wax medallion or an engraving depicting a saint or holy scene—encircled by a ring of delicate faux pearls or beads.Paperolles (Quilling): Surrounding the central medallion is highly intricate, symmetrical paperolles artwork. This technique involves tightly rolling, folding, and shaping narrow strips of gilded and colored paper to create decorative floral and scrollwork designs.Relic Placement: Small compartments woven into the corner floral arrangements traditionally hold tiny, carefully wrapped first- or second-class relics accompanied by identification labels (cartouches).
