Here we go!!!
We have a more serious seed starting setup this year, which is super exciting! We’re going to try and grow more cabbage and cruciferous vegetables, mainly because they are so beneficial to hormone health! Other than that, I found a parsley variety from MIgardener / Luke Marion that has a parsnip-like root that I am super excited to try!
It’s going to be a GREAT year! 😁💚

This eagle was found down near Baraga and unable to fly more than 10-15 feet. Thanks to some caring folks, he was captured and then transported by the DNR to us. He was suffering from a serious foot injury and was emaciated. While he did have a readable lead level, it was subclinical. With medication and specific treatments, this eagle regained his feisty attitude and was transported downstate to A.R.K. / Association to Rescue Kritters for further treatment. We can't thank our community, wonderful volunteers, and fellow rehabbers enough for enabling us to care for these amazing birds!

Our venison stash took a hit. If you would like to contribute to caring for these creatures, please consider donating.

Yesterday we did some more plant dye testing! This time around was aspen leaves in water, 30-60min acid bath, then 2hrs simmering in the dye solution and leaving in solution to cool overnight. Same process for black eyed Susan flower heads. These both came out a brownish-tan color.
Currently just testing on some leftover white yarn that I have. It’s all synthetic fiber, so I’m thinking I want to get some other fiber types and see how these dyes change!

Working on some new skills!
Kept saying this winter I wanted to use my practice knitting gauges to try out natural dyes. Finally got around to it!
First try I used St John’s Wort simmered in water for a couple hours. Soaked the gauges in a vinegar water bath and some others in a baking soda & water bath for a while before dyeing. The colors came out very similar, but I think the vinegar bath ones looked nicer.
Today I’m trying aspen leaves, and black eyed Susan 😁 more pics coming later!
