Thursday’s food for thought: Not all rugs are created equal! We are all on the hunt for a great deal on rugs, especially great area rugs. Remember when you’re in the market and making that investment that rugs made from natural materials like seagrass, sisal, and jute are beautiful, but a little more care needs to be given to avoid stains etc. (they absorb everything). Did you know though the there are some great dupes made from polyester and PET? Even jute/wool blends hold up a bit better in high traffic areas. Wool is also antimicrobial. Polyester, nylons and PET are work horse materials. Be very careful with silk and its man-made version, viscose. Viscose blends can be just fine, but you need to treat the rug properly at purchase. Silks should be used in areas without high traffic and will fade in the sun.
Cliff’s notes version of this post: Research the contents of the rug you are buying. So many materials out there and not all are created equal!🧐
PS- If Oushak and Turkish rugs are your jam, they are most often made from wool. Very strong and durable, that’s why there is such a vast antique market. Many also are passed down as heirlooms.
