Did you know that 85% of homeowners rely on a professional designer when they want to create a dream kitchen? There are many good reasons why that percentage is so high. Building a dream kitchen involves numerous processes and details. Principal roles that designers play are that of guide and curator. Homeowners spend hours, days, weeks and even months researching options before making an appointment with a designer. We know that the Internet is both our friend and foe. While the Internet provides access to every product and service that you could ever need for a renovation project, the amount of information available online can be overwhelming, is often incorrect, is likely to cause analysis paralysis, contributes to unrealistic expectations and elevates stress levels. That’s where a professional designer and showroom can be your greatest asset. Showroom professionals specialize in making order out of chaos.
Because kitchen designers specialize in kitchens primarily, they not only bring a specific expertise not available from other sources, they also provide homeowners fresh perspectives, often providing new layouts, configurations and floor plans that homeowners had not previously considered. These new perspectives often result in a more functional, beautiful and enjoyable kitchen. Providing a new and enlightened perspective is especially important to homeowners because of the multiple roles that kitchens now serve.
Homeowners should expect their showroom professional to narrow product choices based on needs, preferences and budgets. That’s why you should expect to answer a lot of questions during initial interviews and meetings ranging from what you like about your existing kitchen and what areas would you like to improve, what style do you prefer, how often do you cook in your kitchen, how often do you entertain, other than meal preparation what other functionality would you like your kitchen to provide, how do you want your dream kitchen to feel like every time your cross the threshold and on and on.
When you research a potential showroom, look on their website for completed projects that reflect your style, but also look at the different styles that are featured. A range of project types and styles that include traditional, transitional, modern, farmhouse and contemporary reflects that the showroom has not only the skill set to meet different tastes and preferences, but also the flexibility to do so.
When you interview a potential designer, ask how they plan to manage the project, the scope of services that they will provide and how they troubleshoot problems. Given today’s supply chain challenges, you should expect your showroom designer to provide a realistic timeline and suggest alternative options in the event that products that are first choices are not available in the timeline needed.
Always ask to see photos of similar projects that the showroom has designed and don’t be shy about asking for references. Additionally, have realistic expectations. There are unforeseen events that happen on almost every project, especially when renovating existing spaces. That’s why we encourage homeowners to ask during the interview process how a designer troubleshoots problems and responds to unforeseen occurrences.
A professional showroom and designer’s primary responsibilities are to make things work and positively change clients’ lives and living spaces. If you would like to ease the stress of the renovation process and increase the happiness of your home and family, give our home improvement team a call today to speak with our Certified Designer.

COVID-19 has transformed the role and functionality of modern kitchens. While the kitchen has long been considered the heart of the home, it now serves multiple roles that include classroom, office, hobby center, restaurant, study, game room and conference room, among others. Increasingly, homeowners are creating the kitchen of their dreams for the long term, that includes design considerations for a multi-generational household and for aging in place. Aging in place is the term to create spaces that can be used by anyone regardless of age, physical condition or mobility, employing universal design principles.

Access is a key to universal design. Open floor plan kitchens are ideal for multigenerational and aging in-place kitchen use because they typically provide access to other living spaces and feature multiple pathways that can accommodate those who may be confined to a wheelchair or need to use a walker. When homeowners request a kitchen where they can age in place, we look at entryways into the kitchen. If we can eliminate doors, that’s great. If not, we determine if they can be expanded. Most doorways are 24 inches wide. You need at least 36 inches to accommodate a wheelchair.

Floorcoverings are another important consideration of a universally designed kitchen. Concrete, tiles and other hard surfaces can put a strain on hips, back and knees. We often recommend textured small format ceramic or nonslip tile or wood, vinyl or linoleum.

Countertop, cabinet and appliance height, reach and safety considerations are also addressed in a universally designed kitchen. Multi-level or adjustable countertops with rounded corners eliminate the possibility of a family member being injured by a sharp corner and can be used by every member of the family regardless of height. Matte and other nonglare finishes make it easier on the eyes to prepare and cook meals, read recipes and perform other tasks.

For cabinets, the standard for an aging-in-place kitchen is to position cabinets three inches lower than standard height. We will recommend cabinets with pull down shelves on upper cabinets and pull-out shelves or drawers for base or floor cabinets.

For faucets, touchless and app-controlled fixtures can be used by every member of the household. The sink should not be more than six inches deep.

Smart lights that can be controlled by voice command, motion or an app also make for not only a smart kitchen but also one that can be safely used by every member of your household regardless of age or physical limitations. Similarly, smart appliances that can be controlled by apps and voice commands via personal digital assistances helps promote safety and ease of use. Ovens that are positioned at waist height or eye level are easier and safer to use than those that are positioned on the floor. We often recommend a designated area for placing hot pots and pans next to the stove or cooktop.

There are multiple storage solutions that provide ease of access to pots, pans, pantry items and other utensils and tools that are used daily in the kitchen. Rest assured that if you want to create a dream kitchen for the long-term, you don’t have to compromise style, functionality, look or feel. The Devil Is In The Details

Professional designers understand and recognize that the little things make a huge difference to homeowners that are creating kitchens of their dreams. That’s one of the most compelling reasons that homeowners trust our designers to make their dreams come true.

Every kitchen needs electrical outlets. Many DYIers and others that don’t understand that outlets can make or break the look and feel of a kitchen. They often allow the electrician to determine size, location and covers of outlets. Imagine a beautiful burnt orange glass backsplash that is interrupted by a white outlet cover. Not only should outlet covers match the color of your backsplash, but also their orientation should complement the aesthetic you want to achieve. There are certain backsplash designs where an outlet, regardless of size and shape, just don’t work. In those cases, we often recommend installing plug molding underneath cabinets or pop-up outlets that can be hidden in a countertop.

Many homeowners want small appliances, such as a toaster or coffee maker, to be permanent fixtures on their countertops. We always ask our clients how they plan to use their kitchen, the small appliances that will be ever-present and other items that will be within arm’s reach daily. This enables us to place electrical outlets directly behind the appliance to avoid the unsightly image of cords hanging all over the place.

In-drawer and in-cabinet docking stations where homeowners can recharge their smart phones and tablets out of sight are additional tools to create a clean and uncluttered look in a new kitchen.

Knowing how a kitchen will be used and how often is essential to creating a design that not only looks out of this world, but functions equally as well as it appears. Preparing meals is a primary function of almost every kitchen. That’s why task lighting is so important. Undercabinet lighting is commonplace in new kitchen, but the key is where that lighting is positioned. If undercabinet lighting is to aid in meal preparation, the lighting should be installed toward the front of the cabinet. If the lighting is designed to highlight the backsplash than the lighting should be installed toward the back of the cabinet.

In-cabinet and in-drawer lighting are other details that help make a kitchen function more efficiently and presently and create a wow factor. Many cabinet manufacturers offer in-cabinet or in-drawer lighting as an option and if not, it’s easy to specify LED strips to illuminate interior spaces.

Many homeowners prefer stainless steel appliances. They look great, but may not always be appropriate based on the design aesthetic that a homeowner wants to achieve. In those cases, we often will recommend paneling not only the refrigerator, but the dishwasher as well.

Finally, placement and number of sinks affect the functionality and look of a new kitchen. Many homeowners opt for sink in an island. They are great for meal preparation, but not so attractive when filled with dirty dishes. That’s why we often recommend placing a prep sink in an island and the main sink next to or near the range/cooktop. The location of the sink in an island also affects functionality. For smaller islands, less than eight feet in length, we often recommend placing the sink at the end of the island to maximize prep and eating areas.

There are hundreds of details that must be considered when designing a new kitchen that are influenced by how and how often a kitchen will be used and for what purposes. In today’s hybrid work environment, kitchens have taken on new roles beyond places to prepare and eat meals. What are the small details that can take a great new kitchen to one that is the envy of your neighborhood? Let’s talk about them. The Island of Your Dreams

Islands remain one of the most popular and requested feature of new kitchens for homeowners. And for good reason. Islands provide storage, countertop space for meal preparation; a place to dine, entertain, do homework and offer options to include refrigerator drawers, steam and microwave ovens, sinks and additional cooking capabilities.

There is no one-size or shape fits all solution for islands. The shape and style depends on the amount of space for an island in a kitchen, look and feel that homeowners prefer and functional uses that meet homeowners’ needs, wants and dreams.

Below are popular options and the pros and cons of each:

Many homeowners who are avid home chefs are particularly attracted to U-shaped islands because they provide three walls for cabinetry, appliances and seating. The main factor in selecting a U-shaped island is space. They tend to be extremely large and even if there is space for a U-shaped island, some homeowners become less enamored when they realize that, because of their size, U-shaped islands are not always the most efficient to use, navigate and clean.

Rectangular islands, also known as galley islands, provide countertop space, cabinetry for storage and in some instances, depending on size, additional space for cooking and seating. Galley islands are typically specified for smaller spaces and open-concept kitchens. The downside can be that character can be compromised for functionality.

L-shaped islands, as the name implies, resemble the letter L. L-shaped islands require a lot of space and can be a great asset making use of dead space in a kitchen and separating cooking and eating areas. L-shaped islands provide an abundance of cooking space, especially if there is more than one avid cook in the family. There is sufficient room for two to operate independently and plenty of space for seating. L-shaped islands typically are not appropriate for open-concept kitchens and don’t necessarily maximize storage opportunities.

Circular-rounded islands are elegant and can serve as focal points for a dream kitchen for homeowners. Circular-rounded islands require a lot of space and provide abundant room for meal preparation, eating, seating and multiple functions kitchens now serve. The downside is that the shape is not the most efficient use of space. Accessing cabinets under a circular or rounded countertops is not as easy as other types of islands.

Double islands can provide one area for meal preparation and cooking and a second area for seating, entertaining, homework, Zoom calls, et. al. Space permitting, double island kitchen are particularly appealing to homeowners who like to cook and entertain.

Kitchen island tables, also known as furniture style, are typically open and smaller than other types of islands. The downside is functionality. Islands that resemble furniture pieces are generally not conducive for meal preparation, cooking or providing storage.

Which island shape or design is the perfect option for your new dream kitchen? Give us a call at 866-437-5330 to discuss the options or make an appointment to see different shapes and sizes at our showroom at 950 FM 1960 Rd. E, Suite B., Houston, TX 77073

Making Smaller Kitchens Appear Larger

There’s a misconception among homeowners. We find several homeowners don’t commit to a kitchen remodel because of their kitchen’s smaller footprint. Size does not matter. Lifestyle, enjoyment and family do. Regardless of the size of the kitchen, the most important factor in renovating or creating new space is to determine how the space will be used. That's why we ask our clients how often they prepare meals, entertain and host family celebrations. We also want to know who uses the kitchen and what activities generally take place in the area. Additionally, we want to understand how homeowners would expand their kitchen use if it were a more enjoyable and welcoming space.

We know how to expand the look and feel of a smaller kitchen without actually increasing the size of the footprint. Here are several ideas to create the illusion of a larger space without compromising the look, feel or functionality.

Thin Is In

Most homeowners may not realize that specifying smaller and thinner appliances creates additional countertop and cabinet space. A standard dishwasher is 24 inches wide, but many of our clients find an 18-inch model that serves their needs and helps provide the space for bigger cabinets elsewhere. The same logic can apply to refrigerators. Many homeowners believe they need the largest fridge that they can fit in a space. A thinner model may serve your purposes if you don't cook or go to the grocery store daily. We often recommend refrigerators that are 30 or 28 inches wide versus the more popular size of 36-inch+ models.

Specifying panels that match your cabinetry is another trick to make a smaller kitchen appear larger because it creates a consistent flow throughout the space.

Lifestyle choice also will influence the sink that we specify. Most clients come to the showroom with the desire for a double sink. Double bowls are great if you cook a lot. They may not be needed if you don’t. A double sink typically requires 36 inches of space. Single bowls require 24 inches. The extra space provides for an additional standard size cabinet.

Along with slimming appliances, specifying slimmer cabinets can help open up a kitchen. Many manufacturers offer thinner versions of the standard 24-inch depth cabinet. Using 12- or 15-inch deep cabinetry creates more floor space and a more open feel.

Make it Light and Bright

White or lighter shades of cabinets will provide a more open feel to a smaller space. Lighting is equally important. Installing interior cabinet lights, undercabinet lighting and in-drawer lighting will make your kitchen look brighter and much larger. The same effect can be achieved by opting for glass door cabinets that can showcase your crystal, fine china or other items that have special meaning to you and your family.

Mirrors help to make smaller rooms larger, and the kitchen is no exception. We will often recommend a mirrored backsplash or stainless steel if stainless steel is the preferred appliance finish. Mirrored surfaces provide a sense of depth to any room, making the space look and feel larger.

COVID-19 has shown a bright light on the health and wellbeing of families. With many being confined to their homes for more than a year, designing for wellness has become top of mind. The role of the home has been transformed, serving multiple purposes such as office, warehouse, gym, assisted-living facility, school room and refuge. Many homeowners want and need their home to function more effectively and promote healthier lifestyles.

Two main rooms in the home where there are multiple opportunities to improve your and your families’ health and wellbeing are the bathroom and kitchen. Many homeowners have taken advantage of the opportunity to convert their primary bathroom into a personal spa by adding steam showers, saunas, wet rooms, multisensory showerheads, and thermostatic temperature control values where you set the water temperature for individual users and that temperature is achieve within 10 to 15 seconds of turning the water on.

There’s nothing more satisfying than stepping out of a shower, especially on cooler days, to a warm and toasty towel. We’ve seen a significant increase in demand for towel warmers and heated flooring systems. Not only do these amenities provide a luxurious experience, they also contribute to health and wellbeing by improving the thermal comfort of the bathroom, but also reduce moisture in a wet environment that helps deter the germs and mildew.

Being confined at home has spotlighted the need for personal spaces where homeowners can have a few minutes all to themselves and wash away the stresses of the day. In addition to multifunctional shower systems, homeowners are opting for soaking tubs that incorporate whirlpool and air systems in addition to light therapy (chromatherapy), aroma therapy and Bluetooth-enabled integrated speakers and sound systems to relax tired muscles and deliver a true spa experience not only in the bathroom but outdoors as well.

Key to effective wellness design is the ability to make homeowners lives easier, simpler and less stressful. We are designing dream kitchens for homeowners with voice activated, app and Bluetooth-enabled appliances that make meal preparation, cooking and clean up easier and less stressful. Touch-free faucets and garbage cans reduce the potential for spreading germs. Water and air filtration, advanced ventilation systems and lighting all contribute to make a new kitchen healthier and easier to use.

How can you make your kitchen, bath and other rooms and spaces in your home healthier, easier to use and less stressful? Give us a call at 866-437-5330 or make an appointment to visit our showroom at 950 FM 1960 Rd. E, Suite B, Houston, TX 77073.

A primary reason why many homeowners want to renovate their kitchens is that the space no longer works for them and they no longer work for the space. In many cases, the design and aesthetic don't meet their needs or those of their families.

What type of dream kitchen will reflect your personality? If you are looking for the tried and true, a white palate might be the perfect fit. White is classic and one of the reasons why more than 50% of homeowners opt for white kitchens.

For homeowners that desire the clean lines and look of white cabinetry, we often recommend complementing the white palate with a bold backsplash of colored glass, patterned tiles or pops of accent color in countertops, wall coverings, faucets and cabinet hardware. Specifying a matte black finish to faucets and cabinet hardware helps to highlight and enhance the look and feel of white cabinetry.

Other options to offset white upper and lower cabinets is to extend the backsplash from the countertop to the ceiling to create a focal point that wows. Painting an island different colors or selecting a different color for lower cabinets that offsets white uppers are other common options to enhance white cabinetry. The choices are almost endless. Not only will a different color serve to soften the space, it also will make the kitchen more enjoyable to use.

Maximizing the space to fit your lifestyle and design sensibilities is another compelling reason to create a kitchen that reflects your personality. Clutter is another common feature of nonperforming kitchens. Kitchens at their core are places to prepare, cook and share meals. There should be adequate space to do so. A well designed kitchen is an organized kitchen. One of the biggest causes of buyer’s remorse among homeowners that recently renovated their kitchens was not investing more in storage solutions. Manufacturers have developed creative drawer and cabinet organizers when paired with in-cabinet lighting systems not only provide effective storage but also makes everything more easily accessible.

For homeowners who frequently use countertop appliances, we often recommend appliance garages that allows you easily access a toaster blender, food processor, etc. that can be easily hidden in cabinetry to free up counter space. Another option to store countertop appliances off the countertop is in pullout drawers in lower cabinets.

If your kitchen no longer works for you and want to explore what it might take to create a kitchen that reflects your unique personality and lifestyle, give us a call at 866-437-5330 or make an appointment to visit our showroom!
