Scent & Violet, flowers and gifts is joining hundreds of floral industry businesses nationwide to surprise local residents in Houston with two free flower bouquets — one to keep and one to give to a friend, family member, colleague, or even a stranger.

Petal It Forward in Houston is scheduled for Wednesday October 21, 2020 at 12811 Westheimer Rd in Houston, TX 77077 beginning at 9 AM. Hundred flower bouquets will be given away on a first-come-first-serve basis.

I still feel excited like a child unpacking the boxes. When the box comes from Hawaii, my excitement grows tenfold. Look at these orchids! Look at them! Chuck, you know how to make my heart flutter. This florist is head over heals with these gorgeous Hawaiian orchids.

Feels like I’ve been there before. It is lovely to see young people excited about flowers and flower combinations that were popular decades ago. Granted, some of these designs are being slightly reinvented, the materials we use are bit more practical and slightly more nature conscious. One of the combinations that is becoming increasingly popular is sunflowers, roses, and baby’s breath. This last one was done in a black hatbox and i think it looks much better than what the original concept looked like in my head. God knows I’m not a photographer. We needed to capture this lovely white arrangement and could not find any other backdrop but the wall in front of our store. I’m wondering if our landlord plans on painting or cleaning it any time soon? This arrangement was part of bridal shower decor that we got to participate in together with another florist. I really liked some of the dry material we used in it.

I am obsessing over this dahlias and, I managed to call dibs on them. Look at them. They are absolutely gorgeous. It is so seldom to get crisp dahlias in Houston but, what do you call a florists that hoard flowers for themselves?

This year for me was all about breaking my own rules and beliefs. I gave in and designed in hat boxes, I let the youngest one persuade me into getting rose bears, and finally I succumbed to combining red roses and sunflowers (publicly). Truth is, most of my “rules” where result of stubbornness and personal dislikes from decades ago. Fashion in itself is always cyclical - flower design is not different. Hat boxes were wildly popular in the seventies. Preserved (dry) flowers dominated late seventies and early eighties - just about every house in my neighborhood had macrame planter and dried and painted thistle bunch. Sunflower and red roses - you guessed it - hello late 80s. Unfortunately, I no longer have my Madonna gloves but here is the slightly updated version of sunflowers and red roses bouquet to commemorate the 80s. So, either my tastes have changed or my dislikes were never truly a dislikes I ended up liking all of them (those rose bears are really cute). This vase combo here slightly reminds me of a hand tied bouquet dropped in a vase with its strong late eighties early nineties influence - We did decide to omit the looped grass, though.

Sometimes, it takes us forever to photograph flowers and plants we’ve been arranging for years. Orchid garden is one of those. Now, that most of our work lives transpire online, this orchid garden deserves to have its own space on our website. What we need to mention is that our Orchid garden features locally grown orchids plants and locally grown snake plant.
