What looks like a paneled wood feature wall at first glance is actually doing double duty. Around the corner, the millwork opens up into a concealed library, creating storage and display space without visually overwhelming the study.

A detail like this is a good example of how architecture can shape the experience of a room. From one angle, the wall reads as a clean architectural element. From another, it reveals a completely different function.

The sun’s out, summer is almost here, and days by the pool are calling.

Designed to make the most of the season, this outdoor living space brings everything together with intention. Covered areas for shade, open space for sun, and a seamless connection between cooking, dining, and relaxing, all arranged to feel easy, comfortable, and meant to be enjoyed.

At the center of this Houston custom home, the living room was designed to connect every major gathering space. The open second-floor overlook keeps the room visually connected to the spaces above, while direct access to the kitchen, dining room, wine room, golf simulator, and pool creates an effortless flow for entertaining.

Imagine starting your day here.

This primary bath is centered on simplicity and balance. Marble surfaces, a freestanding tub, and a walk-in shower are arranged with clarity, creating a space that feels open and quietly refined.

What started as a renovation ultimately became a new build after honest conversations about what would best support this family long term.

One of the most rewarding parts of the process is designing homes around the way people actually live. In this project, the kitchen, living, dining, and play spaces were all intentionally connected to create a home that feels open, functional, and centered around family life.

Following last week’s Studio Chat with Olivia, Mark joins us to share one thing many clients don’t realize before starting a custom home: how much work happens behind the scenes before construction begins.

From aerial height restrictions and permitting to in-house code research and site planning, every project involves layers of coordination long before the first wall is framed.

At Collaborative Design Group, thoughtful architecture starts well before the build itself.

Stay tuned for next week as Olivia returns for the next Studio Chat.

Enduring character is found in the details above.

Layered trim and recessed panels create a sense of order and depth, with clean symmetry bringing a refined, traditional balance to the space.

A work in progress at our Spanish Modern project, this tucked-away study sits just off the two-story library and offers a quieter moment within the home. Arched windows bring in natural light throughout the day, while pocket doors allow the office to be tucked away when needed.

Even at this stage, the relationship between the library and study already feels intentional and connected, designed around how the client will move through the space daily.

A home shaped around a 75-year-old tree. The room beside it is lifted just enough to protect the root system, allowing everything else to settle naturally around it.

A solution that respects the site and informs the design.
