I am a survivor of a Traumatic Brain Injury and this is my story:
January 29th 2014 I had a bad wreck and I was lifeflighted to Hermann Memorial downtown. I was then transferred to Tirr Rehabilitation where I was for the next six weeks and began my therapy. After Tirr, I went to Touchstone Rehabilitation where I lived for the next seven months. I did therapy, Occupational, Speech, and Physical. Af
ter Touchstone,I went to Tirr In the Woodlands as an outpatient and continued my therapy,Ot and Speech. I no longer needed Physical therapy because I was running and swimming. For a short period of time, I was with Rehab Without Walls. It was therapy but not in a classroom setting. We went to public places and practiced everyday things like swiping credit cards. Yes, swiping credit cards! The stroke left me with a condition called Aphasia. It affects my right hand. My fingers don't receive the signals from my brain to do what I want them to do. So.....I do lots of therapy. It has been over two years and I am still in therapy. I have a small speech impediment and I still do therapy on my hand, My therapist took me to a ceramic shop where I painted a cross.I did not do to good but once you fire the ceramic it is hard to see the mistakes. My Mom saw I was excited about painting and decided to do something other than ceramics. She went to Michael's and purchased a small wood cross, a brush and some paint. I painted the little cross but it was just ok. With practice my painting was getting better. We decided this was great therapy for my hand, We noticed that my writing was getting better,so.... we went back to Michael's and got several different wood crosses and a lot of colored paints and more brushes. I enjoyed painting my crosses but they were very plain. We went to the dollar store and found some trinkets to decorate the crosses with. I enjoyed this very much so we began shopping Michael's and Hobby Lobby for more decorations. My Mom went to Home Depot and purchased some wood and my Dad cut it so that I can make crosses. I began painting and decorating large crosses. Lisa's Crosses was born. This is the best therapy for my hand and my brain. I hope you enjoy: Lisa's Crosses
