A new collaboration

I studied conceptual art, then spent eighteen years in design and communications across the fashion and the luxury watch industry, at brands that are among the most copied in the world. I have always loved the conversation around authorship as a philosophical question. Now I run a brand whose pieces have been knocked off more times than I can count, and in a world this connected, I find I feel only compassion and curiosity about it.

I read a lot of rage on the internet on this topic, but for me it sort of leads me ruminate about the human condition instead. The artists plight. The sometimes tragic comedy that is the act of creating.

When I open social media, the first word that comes to me is cacophony. So much is being made, and so much of it is similar yet subtly different: referenced, reverse-referenced, turned into memes, or copied outright.

I have always welcomed the conversation about copying, because I believe there is room for everyone. Even in its most shameless forms, plagiarism and intellectual theft, it asks us to look at the why, the human why, which in each of us has more to relate to than to repel.

Meet six stone vases, designed in collaboration with the beloved jewelry designer Janie Kruse Garnett.

Each vase is carved, cut and polished from a single block of stone, and each borrows the vocabulary of Janie’s jewelry: the column, the cornice, the dentil.

Janie comes from a family of self-taught florists who take the practical art of arranging very seriously. They keep prized vintage vessels, each reserved for a particular flower from the family’s gardens.

Carved from a single block of stone, the Rose Bowl is made for short-cut roses. Their heavy heads need a point of friction to hold them in position, so we drilled a small hole inside the bowl for exactly that.

A nineteenth-century cone ink bottle, carved at its original three inches, its narrow neck made for a few short stems.

The Tuscan, the most restrained of the five classical orders, turned into a globe and polished until the stone holds the light.
