I've been fooling around with Old Master paintings lately. It's a sophisticated and complicated field that features 20+ countries and six centuries. I don't have a clue-- I just buy them if I like the quality of the picture and the frame.

Just acquired this beautiful 1870's frame with walnut surround. Now I need a 30 x 50 Hudson River painting!

An amazing painting done at Great Kills on Staten Island, 1917. The artist William Jean Beauley is rarely seen. 40 x 50 inches, on a heavy wooden panel (I can't lift this picture alone.) Still in it's original Newcomb-Macklin frame.

It's time for our "Painting of the Month" for February. We love the work of contemporary artist Michael Theise and the trompe l'oeil style in which he paints.

Theise graduated from the Paier School of Art in Hamden, where he studied under another trompe l’oeil master, Ken Davies. While studying under Davies, Theise experimented with realism, primarily by painting African wildlife with intense attention to detail. His passion segued naturally into trompe l’oeil, as he began using objects of compelling interest in his compositions. Captivated by the new direction of his painting, Theise dedicated himself to the trompe l’oeil tradition.

Today, Theise is recognized nationally for compositions that employ diverse subjects such as American currency, playing cards, game boards, portrait miniatures, and nods to Rembrandt Peale, John Singer Sargent, and Jackson Po***ck to create visual allegories.

Check out our website to see more illusionary paintings by Theise and reach out if you'd like more information on his works.

Welcome 2026! We're kicking off our "Painting of the Month" series with a unique piece by Warren Sheppard; the painting is oil on wood palette measuring 11” x 14” in total on the mounted background.

A student of Dutch marine artist, Mauritz de Haas, Warren Sheppard (1858-1937) built two successful careers around his love of the sea: marine painting and yacht designing.

He was born in Greenwich, New Jersey, a town on the Delaware River below Philadelphia, which has been associated with ships and shipping since the earliest Colonial times. His father was a sea captain and the young Sheppard took many voyages with his father to make artistic studies. He learned perspective drawing at Cooper Union in New York City in addition to his studies with de Haas. In 1879, he spent four months sketching Mediterranean port cities including Gibraltar, Genoa, Naples and Messina in Sicily. Between 1888 and 1893, he also studied painting in Venice and Paris.

By the time he was in his mid-thirties, he had established himself as a successful illustrator and painter. The yachts he painted were the most lavish of his day, owned by the wealthiest of men. He was an expert in the design and rigging of ships of present and earlier times. His work was highly regarded for its authenticity as well as its artistic merit.

Wishing everyone continued good health and happiness for the New Year. We're here most weekends, by appointment, or by chance. Give us a call or stop by whenever.

This month's "Painting of the Month" is a moonlit scene by Dame Laura Knight (1877-1970). Knight was a painter in the figurative, realist tradition, who embraced English Impressionism. In her long career, Knight was among the most successful and popular painters in Britain. Her success in the male-dominated British art establishment paved the way for greater status and recognition for female artists.

In 1936 she became the third woman elected to full membership of the Royal Academy. Her large retrospective exhibition at the Royal Academy in 1965 was the first for a woman. Knight was known for painting amidst the world of the theatre and ballet in London, and for being a war artist during the Second World War. She was also greatly interested in, and inspired by marginalized communities and individuals, including Romani people and circus performers.

This month's 'Painting of the Month' is a stunning 42"x32" oil on canvas by Robert Brackman, American (1898-1980).

From 1931, he had a long career teaching at the Art Students League in New York and was a life member of the League. He also taught at the American Art School in New York City, the Brooklyn Museum School, the Lyme Art Academy, and the Madison Art School in Connecticut.

As a portraitist, he painted notables including John D Rockefeller, Jr., Charles Lindburgh, and John Foster Dulles as well as portraits commissioned by the Air Force Academy and the State Department. Goanna Dreaming by Marilyn Armstrong.

Marilyn was born in the Jay Creek community, but grew up in Hermannsburg where her father worked for the Finke River Mission as an engineer. It was here that Marilyn remembers watching Albert Namatjira and Clifford Possum painting and being inspired by them and being given permission to paint the dream time stories.

As a teenager she was a vocalist with the Aranda band in Hermannsburg. She started to paint back in 1988 as a stress reliever. Clifford encouraged Marilyn to develop her skills with her dot painting, helping her to understand and paint the Dream time stories of the area they are from. Marilyn has many skills and worked as a counselor at the women’s and children’s centre also with Aboriginal congress as a health worker.

Marilyn moved back to Jay Creek in 1974. Although she spends a lot of time with her young family, she still likes to do beadwork, paint and do leather work which she learnt from her father.

Marilyn has been on the board of Ngurratjuta Aboriginal Corporation for many years and it was at her suggestion that the Art centre was formed to create a place for artists to come and paint when they are in town and pass on their knowledge to the younger generations.
