Hello & Welcome To My Furniture Business page! My name is Patty and I started this furniture refinishing journey of mine right around my 50th birthday...Thus the reason I named my business "Mid-life Revival". This former Registered Nurse traded in her stressful day job in November 2017 to pursue a "mid-life desire" to do something totally different and creative while still making money...

Rescuing and Reviving furniture pieces one piece at a time! We live in such a disposable world; Even when it comes to furniture! So much of today's affordable furniture is not made anywhere close to the quality of the past. Preserving the past one piece at a time is what excites me about what I am now doing with my mid-life! I find it so rewarding to rescue and restore discarded and outdated furniture with good bones rather than see it be disposed of! I especially love to restore special family pieces that have been passed down to myself and my clients! I live and presently work from my home in Hudsonville, MI. I sell one of a kind vintage pieces (finished & unfinished) on my website (www.mid-life-revival.com) that have been already refinished by me with high quality prep work and products; as well as, unfinished pieces that can be customized for your home or cottage. I also do welcome custom work inquiries if someone has a furniture piece(s) they would like for me to preserve for them. WELL THAT WAS FUN!

So this was my first time repurposing a vanity into two bedside tables and you know what, I can't wait to do it again!

As you will see here, there was quite a bit of work that went into this project, but I am happy to report that it was well worth it! I was able to sell the set in less than 12 hours for $500 with multiple interested buyers!

Here is a breakdown of the products I used as well as some additional details that developed during this transformation...

> Because of the curvature of the top, there would not have been an overhang on one side, so I did end up phoning a friend to make me new tops. I visited a local lumber company (Elenbaas in Jenison, MI) to choose the wood species I wanted and my friend Jake did the rest (cutting, glueing, and routering the edges). Thank you Jake!🙌

> After priming the body with Bin Shellac clear primer, I chose to paint it in London Black by Melange. I also chose to do some subtle distressing to give the piece some dimension, expose the original dark finish and to tie it in with the top and legs!!!

> To save some time, I actually gave the legs an acetone soak and then a good sanding prior to applying a fresh coat of stain. I used General Finishes Antique Walnut for both the tops and legs and sealed them with Minwax wipe on polyurethane.

> The original hardware was cleaned up carefully as to not disturb the existing patina and then I lightly embellished them with European Gold Rub-n-buff.

> The drawers (inside & out) were treated to a massage with Howard’s wood conditioner and then lined with this beautiful drawer liner I found on Amazon. (You can find the link in my Amazon Shop Highlight Bubble)

> I used a pocket jig for the first time to create holes for the screws that would secure the new tops in the back. In the front, there had already been screws securing the top, so I reused those holes.

As I stated at the start, I definitely would like to do this again. How about you, have you or would you try this type of furniture flip?...Let me know in the comments below.

Have you ever refinished a piece of furniture sealed with lacquer?

In the 13+ years of working on furniture, I had never done anything like this. I was very open with the client from our very first meeting about my lack of experience, but after doing some research and consulting with I decided to accept the challenge!

Here is a 90-second recap of that project from start to finish.

To be perfectly honest, this project was initially intimidating and definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone...But looking at it now compared to where I started, I think it definitely was a successful transformation and worth pushing myself!! Would you agree?

Please share your thoughts and questions about this project below.

If you have ever accepted an “out of your comfort zone” project, what was your experience like?

I want to thank Aaron for guiding me through the lacquer removal and clean-up... I really appreciate your support Aaron!

This classic style bankers office chair arrived at my workshop a few weeks ago with a very worn and scratched finish.

I ended up disassembling the chair, which made it easier to strip, sand, stain, paint and seal.

While removing the old finish was more labor-intensive than I initially anticipated, the final result was well worth it...My client is very pleased with the outcome and now it’s ready for the office again!

Supplies Used:
*KleanStrip
*3x4 Surfprep Sander
*One Coat General Finishes Antique Oak Followed By One Coat Of Old Master’s Natural Walnut
*Minwax Warm Satin Wiping Poly
*Krylon Satin Black Spray Paint

Re-Introduction Time...Hello my name is Patty and I have been refinishing furniture for the past 13+ years. What unexpectedly began as a creative outlet for me, launched me into a mid-life career change at the end of 2017.

Whether you are seeing my account for the first time or have been here for a while let me briefly fill you in on how this furniture journey all started.

I had dabbled in painting and staining a few furniture pieces when I first got married, but what really started the momentum was when my 2 oldest daughters (who are twins) graduated from college in 2012 and we began furnishing their own places with family hand-me-downs and second hand pieces. From there, I began receiving requests from co-workers, church friends, and eventually from total strangers. Fast forward 5 years and I retired from a 30 year career as a Registered Nurse to start Mid-life Revival!

Since my career change at the end of 2017, besides refinishing furniture, I also have had the flexibility and privilege of helping our three daughters with a variety of house projects…All of which have grown my skill set and confidence tremendously!!

Coming up with a name for my business was challenging, but I kept coming back to the fact that I was (in my humble opinion) at mid-life and I had found something that had revived my excitement to get up in the morning and go to work! I also feel like each furniture piece that I save is being revived at its mid-life point as well!

So with that backstory, I want my story and the things I share here to INSPIRE, ENCOURAGE, AND EDUCATE others!!!

I challenge you to go dabble in some form of creativity as well (if you are not already doing something) because you just never know where it will lead!

If you like what you see, please tap that FOLLOW BUTTON and introduce yourself!

Thank you for stopping by!
Sincerely, Patty Brummel 🌿

AVAILABLE TO PURCHASE

What started as a free find on Facebook Marketplace to use as a desk in my workshop, surprisingly changed direction once I started sanding the top.

Beneath the many scratches and dated orange finish, I discovered a beautiful wood grain which made me realize that this piece deserved a much better second chance in someone's home rather than in my workshop!

Constructed from solid pine and recently updated in a timeless farmhouse style, this versatile piece is designed to suit most any room. With plenty of surface space to spread out, it would make a great office desk, but also would function equally as well as a sofa table, entryway console, or maybe even as a kitchen island.

Dimensions:
59"L x 22.5"D x 30"H

Details:
The legs, apron, and drawer were painted in Melange’s London Black, a timeless warm black. The top was stained with General Finishes Antique Walnut and sealed with their high performance satin topcoat for durability.
