Every night we look at our kids while they’re sleeping,
and no matter the day—
how many times we lost our patience and wanted to pull our hair out,
how many times they didn’t listen,
and how we wished the hours away,
when we see them asleep,
𝘸𝘦 𝘧𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘪𝘯 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯.
Because they look like they did when they were younger versions of themselves.
The same eyelashes that used to give us butterfly kisses.
The same peaceful and innocent sleepy look they’ve had since they were a baby.
And it doesn’t matter if they are 18, 11, or 5 years old,
all we see is that sweet newborn with little arms, feet, and squishy rolls.
And we enjoy the flashback to this little them.
𝘉𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘸𝘦 𝘧𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘪𝘯 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯.
Because every day,
no matter their age,
they overwhelm us with worry.
They overwhelm us with fear.
They overwhelm us with pride.
They overwhelm us with love.
So, most of the time,
we’re left overwhelmed by it all.
But every night, when we walk in to check on them,
to stare,
we can confirm,
our children are happily and safely sleeping, draped in our love.
And that matters most.
