One of my many favorite parts of owning an art supply store is getting to play with all the materials we bring in (an unexpected perk that I have to do to ensure we only carry quality materials! 🤩).
Lately, I’ve been experimenting with different mediums, textures, and approaches—combining watercolor, ink, oil paint, scraping, layering, dripping, and whatever else catches my curiosity in the moment. The result has been a body of work that feels completely different from anything I’ve done before, and honestly, I’m loving it.
As artists, we spend so much time trying to master techniques, but sometimes the most exciting discoveries happen when we let go of the rules and start exploring. Some of these pieces feel like they’re being built and torn apart at the same time. Areas of realism emerge from layers of texture, drips, and seemingly chaotic marks.
I’ve jokingly started calling this style “Destructive Abstract Realism.” 😂
Because sometimes the path to something beautiful involves scraping off paint, covering up your favorite passage, making a mess, and trusting the process.
I’d love to know—what medium, technique, or style have you been experimenting with lately? What happy accidents have led you somewhere unexpected?
