Springfield’s own Ruth E. Carter makes history again!

The Hollywood icon and five-time Oscar nominee—the most nominated Black woman in history—is up for another Oscar for her stunning costume design in 2025’s record-breaking Sinners, the first film to earn 16 Oscar nods!

Born right here in Springfield in 1960, Carter discovered her love for costume design at Hampton University. Since then, she’s brought stories to life through fabric, color, and texture—from her early collaborations with Spike Lee to the blockbuster Black Panther films.

Visit the Wood Museum of Springfield History to explore Carter’s life and career—and snap a photo with a model of her iconic Black Panther design!

Carter reflects, “It’s the story of a hometown girl who had a dream… and look what she was able to create from a single-parent household. If I can do it, they can do it. You too can live out your dream.”
