The wheel is fine. So why reinvent it when you can just make it better?

What does an ancient Egyptian table have to do with the furniture we design today? More than you might think.

For Crystal, one of our newest designers, this is the first time putting her designer brain into blog form. And she went straight to a question that designers have been asking in one way or another for centuries: Where have our ideas come from, and what can we do with them next?

From ancient furniture forms to natural light and biophilic design, Crystal takes a fresh look at why knowing our design history can help us create better spaces for the future.

And yes, she makes a pretty good case for why we don't always need to reinvent the wheel. Read Crystal's first blog below and see where a look backward can inspire what's next. https://bit.ly/4x6xm2T

✨ A well-deserved level up! ✨

We’re excited to celebrate Jamie Gill on her promotion to Level 1 Design Associate! 🎉

Jamie joined the IDO team in June as our intern and has already made a wonderful impression with her talent, quick wit, and can-do spirit. We’re so happy to have her on our team and even happier to see her growing with us!

Congratulations, Jamie!

💔 Rest easy, Dolly. A true icon, storyteller, songwriter, and all-around legend. We’ve always had a soft spot for Dolly Parton at IDO. We paid tribute to her long-standing career in music and film during our very own Spirit Week a few years ago, complete with our very own Burt Reynolds counterpart.

Thank you for the music, the wit, the heart, and the reminder that you can be kind, clever, glamorous, and a little bit ridiculous all at once. You’ll always have a little piece of IDO’s heart, Dolly. 💗

🐾 PLEASE WELCOME THE NEWEST MEMBER OF THE IDO FUR TEAM: TOASTER WAFFLES!

Toaster Waffles made her IDO debut today, courtesy of Jamie, and we’re pretty sure she already has the office dynamics figured out.

✨ First order of business? Jumping onto desks. Because apparently Toaster Waffles is part dog, part cat, and 100% convinced she belongs everywhere. 🐱🐶

👀 Curious about EVERYTHING? Absolutely.
🦴 Located the good treats? Immediately.
🎯 Identified the treat dealer-in-chief? Ahem… Amanda Medlen.
💨 Got recruited to the Zoomies Express by Megan & Samantha? Multiple times.

Between investigating every corner, hopping onto desks, making new friends, and being enthusiastically riled up by Megan and Samantha Henrickson, Toaster Waffles kept us all entertained.

We have a feeling this was her first visit of many.

Welcome to the team, Toaster Waffles! Your official job title is TBD, but Chief Treat Inspector & Desk Supervisor feels pretty fitting. 🧇

Healthcare design is getting more human. 👏

Our latest blog share from Healthcare Design Magazine takes a look at the 2026 Healthcare Design Showcase and the ideas shaping where healthcare spaces are headed next.

From staff respite and wellness to more thoughtful patient and family experiences, the conversation is shifting toward spaces that work harder for the people who use them.

And one theme really stood out to us: great healthcare design should feel connected from the lobby to the patient room and everywhere in between.

That’s a conversation we’re always interested in at IDO. ✨

Give it a read and see what’s changing, what’s working, and where healthcare design still has room to grow. https://bit.ly/4y5KOFc

Chicago Design Week Edit: A material moment worth stepping on. ✨

Milliken & Company Gilded Stitch caught our attention for the way it challenges what flooring can be. This breakthrough material delivers the durability and performance of a hard surface while bringing the warmth, comfort, and design flexibility of a soft one.

Even better? It’s designed with circularity in mind, allowing it to be recycled and remade into itself. A smart example of how today’s materials are not just performing in a space; they’re telling a story.

Thoughtful design is always a collaboration—and every good story has a great ending. ✨

We’re adding the final layer to our overhead lighting story with Sculpt by Axis Lighting. This linear system brings clean geometry, visual rhythm, and a strong architectural presence to the office, with flexible lengths ranging from 4 feet to longer configurations to suit a variety of applications and design needs.

Together, these lighting elements create something more than illumination. They bring energy, definition, and a fresh vibrancy to the spaces we spend our days creating in.

A special thank you to ESL-Spectrum and Pam Eberhardt for the thoughtful design and vision behind the transformation, and to Electric Plus for expertly bringing it all to life.

The installation is complete, and this chapter is officially glowing.

Linear, but make it ✨Sculptural. ✨Clean lines. Continuous illumination. Architectural presence. The Sculpt by Axis Lighting brings a streamlined, integrated look while adding visual interest overhead.

More than a product. More like a partnership.

This week’s blog takes a look at how manufacturers are moving beyond individual products and into more collaborative, integrated solutions that help designers tackle performance, acoustics, budgets, installation, and design intent earlier in the process.

And the timing is pretty perfect because we’re putting that idea into practice this week.

LightArt and Armstrong Ceiling Solutions are both stopping by IDO to preview products with our team, giving us a chance to see what’s new, ask questions, and talk through how these solutions might actually work in the spaces we design.

Because good design doesn’t happen in a vacuum, it happens through conversations, collaboration, and occasionally a really good product sample. Take a look, then stay tuned for what we discover this week! https://bit.ly/4wEkdhh
