While in New York with the University of Kentucky’s School of Architecture Advisory Board earlier this month, Kevin Cooper visited the recently-opened New Museum expansion, designed by OMA.

Special thanks to OMA partner Shohei Shigematsu and Associate Jake Forster for providing a personal tour of the addition.

This spring, the University of Kentucky’s School of Architecture Advisory Board met in New York City. It’s always inspiring to meet with the Director and Board members to blend discussions related to the education of architecture and the practice of architecture.

Special thanks to Mark Schendel and Studio Gang for hosting the meeting. Also thanks to Director Jeffrey Johnson and Board President Patrick Hobgood for organizing a wonderful weekend in the Big Apple.

Lots of construction progress on Kokomo Fire Station #6! The building’s geometry is coming through now that the concrete masonry, cast-in-place concrete, and structural framing are in place. Once the brick and storefront are installed, the facade will blend modern forms with Kokomo’s vernacular architecture.

StudioAXIS, along with Schmidt Associates, joined the April AIA Indianapolis Monthly Meeting hosted by bo-mar Industries for a candid conversation on mentorship, leadership, and growth.
Mentorship begins with real human connection to build a strong professional foundation.
And from that comes a simple truth…..there’s no single path in architecture.
Leadership isn’t defined by timing or life milestones, but by perspective, resilience, and the clarity to define your own path.

Drew, Jose, and Anne Marie had a wonderful time visiting Holy Name Catholic School in Beech Grove, where they spoke with 8th grade STEM students about what it’s like to be an architect. As part of the visit, they led a fun, hands-on activity in which students built bridges using toothpicks and gumdrops. The excitement continued as each bridge was tested by adding pennies to see which design could hold the most weight. It was a great way for students to explore design and creativity while keeping structure in mind.

“Wine is not so much a passion as much as an interest or a fascination,” says founding partner Kevin Cooper. He’s made several trips to Napa Valley, where, since the 1960s, wine makers have valued quality over quantity. The care involved in growing vines, with attention to details like soil depth and altitude relative to the “fog line,” is what most fascinates Kevin. A vine can grow grapes for up to 35 years, and farmers use analog or digital methods for keeping track. Known for his love of architectural details, it’s unsurprising Kevin enjoys these details behind his favorite wines!

Architectural associate Jose Luster fell in love with anime at a young age. After moving to the United States from Spain, he was still learning English and appreciated anime’s visual storytelling. In the decades since then, it’s continued inspiring him by telling stories of characters whose backstories influence their role in the bigger narrative. “I’ve learned some of the best life lessons from people who have never existed,” Jose says. He also finds the art form instructive for architecture, not in its aesthetics but in its priorities. Rather than perfecting form, anime elevates feeling and connection, giving characters the freedom to appear in their fullest expression.
