No framed history of the house. No printed description of the region.
Just a pair of binoculars on the nightstand, angled toward the window.
On a recent critique at a lakefront property in northern Michigan, this was one of the most effective sense-of-place details I encountered. You don't need to see what's outside to know it's worth looking at — the object tells you everything.
The best sense-of-place design doesn't announce itself. It hands you the binoculars.

After visiting more than a dozen boutique properties, the single most common finding across all of them is this:

A comfortable-looking chair, in a beautifully designed guest room, with no lamp nearby to read in it.

I've documented this at more than half the properties I've visited. The chairs were chosen with care. The room was designed with attention. Someone thought about comfort — and then stopped one step short of delivering it.

A floor lamp in the right position changes everything about that chair. It converts an invitation into a promise kept.

One observation. Twelve properties. The gap between intention and ex*****on is almost always the same.

What does the Küster Guest Experience by Design Critique report actually look like?

It isn't a building inspection or a deficiency list. It's a room-by-room account of the guest experience as I lived it — written in plain language, organized the way a guest moves through a property.

For each observation, I note what I found, what it communicates to a guest, and what design directions are worth considering.

The goal isn't to hand you a to-do list. It's to give you a clear picture of your property through a guest's eyes, and to open a productive conversation about what comes next.

That conversation is where the real work begins.

Guests don't remember the average of their stay. They remember the peak — the single best moment — and the end.

This is well-established psychology with a simple practical implication: a stay with a good enough room and one extraordinary moment will be remembered as a great stay. A stay that's uniformly pleasant but never peaks won't be.

The question for every independent property: what is the designed peak moment in a guest's stay? And what is the last impression you leave?

Most invest heavily in the room. Far fewer invest in the peak or the ending with the same intentionality.

Five rooms at the same property. One had a chocolate, a room key on the nightstand, and a flashlight. Another had none of these.

Same property. Same nightly rate. Very different experiences depending on which room you landed in.

The owner hadn't designed it this way — the rooms had just evolved differently over time, and no one had stepped back to ask: what does every guest receive?

Consistency isn't about making every room identical. It's about ensuring the deliberate touches reach every guest, not just some of them.
