Cleaning...the frame is original and of the period (ca. 1840). A faux mahogany graining that was soot and wax covered. The grain is becoming more visible. The details of the naval uniform are visible. The cactus - did you know that the Eastern prickley pear occurs naturally from Ontario to Florida and is not found in Europe?

This painting (shown here in daylight) is fascinating for several reasons. 1. It was painted in the 1830s-40s. 2. It's in its original frame. The subject"s hair is rather short for that time period. 3. They are dressed in a sailor's uniform. 4. The background is elaborate and the sky is a bit dark and ominous. 5. The vegetation in the foreground looks like prickly pear cactus. 6. No in painting or repairs 7. There's a signature (?) - lower right.

Red earthenware vessel/jar likely made by the Hinkle-Mort Pottery, Jefferson County, TN (eastern TN, NE of Knoxville) circa 1855-1860. Decorated around the entire piece with incised straight and wavy lines. Surface covered in a dark-brown lead-and-manganese glaze. Rare.
