Rancho Mirage (Palm Springs) has a great example of midcentury design. Sunnylands is the collaboration of architect A. Quincy Jones with interior designer Billy Haines, a man who left Hollywood because he would not accept the pretense of a fake,

The spaces are beautiful yet, tightly wrought and are littered with pictures and documents of the architects and abetters of trickle down economics and anti gay legislation. Ron and Nancy, Margaret Thatcher, Colin Powell et al all featured prominently.

I could not help but feel a sense or wry sense of joy for Haines as he hopefully cried all the way to the bank. He was more man than some of those clowns could ever be and more woman than they’d ever gotten.

Pride Month brings up deep memories.

Ridiculed in school, attacked with coke bottles, denied service, I became callous and defiant understanding it just wasn’t always easy. Many have had it far more difficult.

I may not always understand someone’s struggle but I follow that each has their own road and it’s none of anyone else’s concern but to be a support.

Friend Carl Raymond has developed a podcast on the Gilded Age with a particularly poignant episode to which I encourage catching.
