Just some facts about luxury Vinyl Tile
LVT FEATURES LVT BENEFITS
Incredibly realistic photo replication
of natural materials (rotogravure process uses an engraved cylinder to produce surface tactile distressing.) The look and feel of nature’s best materials at a lower cost are a reality of LVT manufacturing
Brands that offer 100% vinyl material Vinyl flooring satisfies Green building standards and earns LEED points in commercial applications.
Inherent safety features Meets requirements of commercial flammability codes, slip resistant requirements…and a menu of other safety codes
Ease of maintenance
Simple damp mopping is the recommended cleaning procedure for LVT floors
Excellent selection of sizes, shapes The size options vary by manufacturer, but many styles are available in 12 x 12”, 18 x 18”, 12 x 24” sizes, and planks in standard (3 x 36” 4.5 x 36) and extra-large widths (7 or 9’ widths).
Naturally water resistant LVT floors are inherently water resistant (and fairly impervious to wet spills from above). It’s important to install over flat, dry, approved substrates so that no water seepage occurs beneath the floor.
Scratch, stain, dent and scuff resistant Specialized wear layers (most common are 20 mil; Amtico International offers a 40 mil layer). Then the floors are coated with urethane to enhance durability
Cost effective Economics factor favorably into the specification of LVT for both commercial and residential applications, giving the look and feel of rich, natural materials at a lower cost
Exceptional durability Because LVT is constructed to withstand commercial wear and tear, it’s probably “over-qualified” for residential use and can handle high-traffic areas with ease. Warranties vary by manufacturer, but it’s not unusual to see 20-25 year warranties on brand name LVT
More resilient than other hard surface floors Because there are multi-layers of vinyl in LVT as well as a resilient backing as the foundation, LVT tiles and planks have more resilience underfoot. It’s easier to stand on for long periods of time AND as an added benefit, it tends to be warmer underfoot than ceramic.
Amazing aesthetics There has been a stunning transformation in the design aesthetics of LVT in the last five years. If you are linking it to “industrial” looking floors, this is where you need to throw away your misconceptions and do some research. This may be the one biggest factor that has caused interior designers to stand up and take note of the new brand of LVT. The realism of the total look, INCLUDING distressed wood finishes, stone and slate tactile surface textures, and even woven textiles imbedded in the wear layers, are grabbing attention.

From our friends at Shaw Floors. Shaw Hardwood flooring products, with their ScufResist™finish, provide superior wear; easy, no-wax care; plus superior resistance to staining from all common household products such as coffee, shoe polish, lipstick, acetone, mustard, and more. A few simple maintenance steps, however, will help protect your investment and keep your Shaw Hardwood flooring looking like new. Click here for a complete guide: Hardwood Flooring Care Guide
For cleaning, make sure you...

Use a soft cloth to blot spills and spots as soon as they happen. Always avoid allowing liquids to stand on your floor.
Sweep, dust, or vacuum the floor regularly with the hard floor attachment (not the be**er bar) to prevent accumulation of dirt or grit that can scratch or dull the floor finish.
Clean the floor with R2X Hard Surfaces Flooring Cleaner from Shaw's line of floor covering care products.
While cleaning is easy, there are a few things to avoid:

Don't use oil based, wax, polish, or strong ammoniated or abrasive cleaners.
Don't use steel wool or scouring powder.
Don't wash or wet-mop the floor with soap, water, oil-soap detergent, or any other liquid cleaning material. This could cause swelling, warping, delamination, and joint-line separation, and void the warranty.
Don't use any type of buffing machine.
Other routine hardwood floor care instructions:
For spots such as candle wax or chewing gum, harden the spot with ice and then gently scrape with a plastic scraper, such as a credit card. Be careful not to scratch the flooring surface. Wipe clean with a damp cloth.
For tough stains, use Shaw's R2X Hard Surfaces Flooring Cleaner.
Do not use any type of buffing machine.
Use protective mats
Good quality entry and exit mats will help collect the dirt, sand, grit, and other substances such as oil, asphalt, or driveway sealer that can otherwise be tracked onto your flooring. Do not use rubber- or foam-backed plastic mats as they may discolor the flooring. To prevent slippage, use an approved vinyl rug underlayment.
Use floor protectors on furniture
Use floor protectors and wide-load-bearing leg bases/rollers to minimize indentations and scratches from heavy objects. As a rule, the heavier the object, the wider the floor protector should be.
Maintain relative humidity level
Maintain a normal indoor relative humidity level between 35 and 55% throughout the year to minimize the natural expansion and contraction of wood.
Heating Season (Dry): A humidifier is recommended to prevent excess shrinkage due to low humidity levels. Wood stove and electric heat tend to create very dry conditions.
Non Heating Season (Wet): An air conditioner, dehumidifier or periodically turning on your heating system can maintain humidity during the summer months. Avoid excessive exposure to water during periods of inclement weather.
Avoid sharp objects
While your Shaw Hardwood floor is one of the most wear resistant floors on the market, sharp or pointed objects can damage it nonetheless.
Watch your feet
Remove shoes with spiked or damaged heels before walking on the floor. They many cause indentations in your flooring.
Watch your pet's feet
Keep your pet's nails trimmed to keep them from scratching your flooring.
Rearrange your rugs and furniture
Periodically rearranging your area rugs and furniture will allow the flooring to age evenly. Exposure to the sun and its UV rays will soften the tone of different species of hardwood to varying degrees and accelerate the oxidation and aging of wood. This can cause the stain and/wood to fade and/or change color. Exotic species such as Brazilian Cherry are more susceptible to color change during the aging process and may actually darken over time. Other species such as Merabu, Pine, Oak and Cherry may also darken over time.
Protect the floor when moving
Use a dolly when moving heavy furniture or appliances. But first, put down a sheet of quarter-inch plywood or Masonite to protect the floor. Never try to slide or roll heavy objects across the floor.

Carpet, one of a home's key decorative elements, helps create a comfortable atmosphere and enhance furnishings. It insulates and softens sound by providing a cushioning layer underfoot, and it's easy to maintain.

Traffic and type of use should determine the construction and color of carpeting choice. A smooth, plush top-of-the-line pile carpet would be a beautiful choice for a bedroom or formal living room. A trackless cut pile, densely constructed, makes a hardworking floor covering in a family room or entryway that has a lot of traffic. Plush pile carpeting -- thick, dense and smooth -- shows every footprint, whereas the twisted fibers of a cut-pile carpet keep footprints and vacuuming tracks from showing.

Cut-and-loop pile construction is used to create patterns that give interest and variety to a one-color carpet. It's also used to imitate the patterning of popular sisal rugs, providing easy maintenance not found in its plant-fiber counterpart.

Berber carpet, often more expensive than other types of carpeting, is constructed of level loops that are not cut. A multicolored Berber in shades of gray, taupe and cream is a hardworking choice for family areas, blending well with many decors and hiding dirt.

Carpeting is available in a wide variety of solid colors and patterns. Patterns and prints are currently popular carpet choices. Low-pile floral patterns are perfect for a French- or English-style country home. Plaid carpeting is great for a family room or home office, with its masculine look and dirt-disguising qualities.

When picking out new carpeting for a room, take along samples of fabric from cushions, draperies and so on. Bring home swatches of appealing carpet, and check the colors in all kinds of light, artificial as well as natural, to get a true idea of the colors.

Carpeting of all sorts is available in a wide price range. More than 95 percent of all carpet is made from synthetic materials because synthetics are easy to clean and keep costs low.
