Kentucky Tow Truck Driver Killed by His Own Truck After It Rolled Downhill on I-275 — Was Assisting Disabled Vehicle From Earlier Crash, Reclassified to Work-Related Death

TAYLOR MILL, KENTUCKY — A 65-year-old tow truck driver was killed Saturday morning on Interstate 275 after his own tow truck rolled downhill and struck him while he was assisting a disabled vehicle from an earlier unrelated crash.

Kenton County Police received the call at approximately 9:18 a.m. reporting a worker struck by a vehicle on eastbound I-275 near the Taylor Mill Road exit. The driver, identified as Randall "Randy" Kuntsman of Independence, Kentucky, had been called to the scene to assist with a disabled vehicle left behind after an earlier crash. While he was working, his tow truck rolled downhill, striking and killing him.

The incident was initially reported as a crash, but after reviewing the scene, investigators determined it was a work-related incident and transferred the case to Kenton County Police as a death investigation. No other vehicles were involved, and police do not believe the incident was suspicious.

Multiple lanes of I-275 were shut down while first responders worked the scene. The interstate fully reopened a few hours later.

Kenton County Police were assisted on scene by the Kenton County Coroner's Office, Taylor Mill Police Department, Erlanger Police Department, Taylor Mill Fire Department, Covington Police Department, Lakeside-Crestview Hills Police Department, and Wilder Police Department.

The investigation remains open. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Det. Sgt. Andrew Kenner at [email protected].
