You never know what’s gonna walk through the door on any given day and sometimes it’s just another old jar to dig through. Most of the time you’re sorting wheat cents, Buffalo nickels, some 90% silver, and the usual bicentennial quarters.

But every now and then… it’s different.

This 1849-O Seated Liberty quarter showed up mixed in with a jar of low-grade better dates. The kind of coin that makes you stop and take a second look. Even better its exact mintage is unknown, since it was lumped in with the 1850-O total of 412,000 struck across both years.

These aren’t just coins and notes… they’re survivors.
Pulled from the depths of the El Cazador shipwreck, the Civil War-era SS Republic shipwreck, and the legendary SS Andrea Doria sinking.
Lost for decades(and some cases centuries)….

April 13, 1976 Americans lined up at their local banks to get freshly issued Bicentennial $2 notes, celebrating the nation’s 200th anniversary. Many then took those crisp new bills straight to the post office to have them officially stamped and canceled, creating a unique piece of history from that day.

50 years later… I decided to take it one step further.

Instead of using a new note, I tracked down an original 1976 $2 bill that had already been stamped, and brought it back to the post office to be canceled again.

The same note.
Two cancels.
One from 1976… and one from yesterday April 13th 2026

50 years apart on a single piece of history.

As we prepare for an exciting new chapter for Old Fort Coin Exchange, I want to take a moment to sincerely thank the Jefferson Area Business Center and Steve Lewis for their hospitality and support.

They provided the space that became the very first brick-and-mortar home for Old Fort Coin Exchange, and I will always be grateful for the opportunity to grow our business there. Over the past year and a half, we’ve built great relationships, welcomed many collectors through the door, and created something truly special.

Thanks to the incredible support from our customers and community, we have officially outgrown our space and it’s time to move to a bigger location! ❤️

One of yesterday’s pickups. A $10 1902 national bank note from the First National Bank of Whitewater Wisconsin. Always nice to add another piece of local banking history.

1983 Jefferson Nickel. NGC MS64 6 FULL STEPS with a bold 50% off center strike. Love mint errors like this, when an everyday coin turns into something truly unique.

1883 Proof Shield Nickel NGC PF65

A beautiful 1883 Shield Nickel certified NGC Proof 65, with a low mintage of just 5,419 pieces struck. While the NGC holder shows some scratches, it certainly doesn’t take away from the stunning detail and eye appeal of this impressive proof issue. A great example of late-series Shield Nickel craftsmanship
