I am Cristina Pickett and since 1998, I have a strong connection to Wisconsin, where I spent a year as an exchange student. During this time, one of the things that made me feel less homesick was my favorite dessert, the famous Brazilian truffles called Brigadeiros! Brigadeiros were born in 1945 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, after World War II, during political campaigns to promote Brigadeiro Eduardo
Gomes, a revolutionary, failed politician. Women could vote for the first time and so they decided to create a new kind of candy to help promote the candidate. However, after the war period, there was a lack of milk and sugar and women had to be creative with the ingredients. Condensed milk was chosen as the mainly base for the new candy and mixed condensed milk with butter and chocolate made the first batch of brigadeiro. Since then, that is the way Brazilians celebrate birthdays, weddings, and all kinds of special moments! Now, 18 years later, I am back in Wisconsin, married to my teenage love and ready to start a new life and family. Jefferson is the city chosen by us to be our new home, and "brigadeiros" are still part of my life because it reminds me of sweet happy times! Brigadeiros are very delicate, always stirred by hand and monitored under watchful eye during the cooking process, hand-rolled, each box is wrapped with care, it takes time and love, as well as all the precious things in life!
