My Luggage Valet in parts. Sometimes, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Most would agree that our little Luggage Valet is much more impressive once it’s been assembled. But to see the parts pre-assembly, it really spells out the steps that go into this or any other piece we make here in our studio.

The cutting of, machining, drilling, tapping, threading, finishing, patina, finishing again, lacquering aluminum which now looks like steel—combined with gorgeous, oily, heavy duty bridle leather straps, sewn on a BIG industrial machine that can sew through this leather like it’s butter.

No one told me to design a luggage valet. One of our best, most consistent sellers.

I’ve started adding small figures to these coal sculptures—markers of scale, a way to imagine them as inhabitable forms, closer to land art than object.

These pieces feel like studies—early sketches for something much larger. Forms that could one day exist at a monumental scale, carved into the earth itself.

Warm season means coal sculpture production is chugging along.

Carved from anthracite—nearly pure carbon, this table hasn’t bee polished yet. There’s always a temptation not to shine it, because in bright light, the liquid swirls in the coal, the variations, the glistening cracks seem so animated.

It’s less about preciousness and more about context, brutalism, and the rust belt mentality that was so ingrained in me from a young age, growing up near Ohio coal mines, steel factories, and the general grit that went along with all that.

I wouldn’t say it’s joyful, but it seems profound when it’s kinda “plain.” But I polished it, and it’s more dazzling, and one more removed from the pain of coal. Maybe that’s preferable.
