From 19th-century parlor antiques to modern dining hubs, every piece that enters our shop has a unique history worth preserving. Our latest blog post covers three recent restoration and repair projects:

1880s Victorian Side Table: Fully disassembled, repaired, and restained solid American walnut base with burl veneer and a restored marble top.

West African Wall Mask: Precision structural repair re-bonding a fractured bird crest while preserving its original dark finish.

Italian Gathering Table: Stripped, sanded, and refinished to erase 20 years of sun damage and bring a broken stool back into service.

When a client asked for a 6-foot round dining table that could open up for extra seating, we knew the engineering "under the hood" would be just as critical as the flawless finish on top. 🪵⚙️

How do you anchor a massive 72-inch top and handle that cantilevered weight when expanded? It takes precision. We combined sculpted, tenoned hardwood blocks with custom wooden extension slides concealed right inside the subframe to keep the top completely rigid, whether it's setting for an intimate dinner or scaling into a spacious oval for a full house.

Check out our latest blog post to see a full breakdown of the workshop process, the stunning dual-tone contrast of ebonized wood against clear-coated walnut, and how we turn complex woodworking concepts into lasting reality.

A toast to fine craftsmanship and historic heritage. 🥃✨

We’re excited to share a look inside one of our latest completed commercial projects: a custom build-out for the Weller Bourbon Tasting Room at the historic Buffalo Trace Distillery!

Partnering with Nimlok, the Open Grain Woodwork team was brought on to craft a refined, high-end atmosphere designed to match the rich legacy of Weller bourbon. From hand-milled Red Oak to precision accent lighting, every detail was custom-engineered for this legendary space—ending with an awesome field trip to Buffalo Trace for the final installation!

Here are a few highlights from the build:

💡 Integrated LED Chair Rail: Custom-milled perimeter molding with hidden LED down-lighting to throw a soft, warm glow across the wainscoting.

🖼️ Massive Custom Mural Frame: An impressive 188” x 41.1” frame encapsulating a vintage panoramic illustration of the distillery grounds.

🥃 Illuminated Shadow Boxes: Sleek black-finished lighted frames designed specifically to showcase individual Weller bottles.

🪵 Precision Stained Red Oak: Over 180 board feet of custom-stained Red Oak engineered to match the historic building's century-old architectural trim right down to the floor.

🖤 Statement "W" Wall: Dark script branding set against raw exposed brick with strategic focal lighting.

Projects like this prove what happens when meticulous woodworking meets thoughtful lighting and commercial design. Whether it’s preserving historic charm or constructing modern illuminated retail displays, our shop is built for high-impact spaces.

Throwback to one of our favorite large-scale custom builds! 🛠️✨

We designed, planned, and fabricated this massive 20’ x 8’ Brown-Foreman Studio Update right here at the Open Grain Woodwork shop in Louisville, KY. It remains a standout showcase of scale, structural planning, and collaborative craftsmanship.

The final setup transformed the space into a high-end tasting lounge aesthetic, featuring:
• Dark gray shelves with a swooping step-down design
• Bold copper-painted standards set against a floor-to-ceiling wood tambour wall
• Integrated warm lighting framing a circular backlit logo

Projects of this magnitude take dedicated teamwork. While our shop built the core framework and shelving, partners stepped in to handle the lighting, tambour backdrop, and custom vinyl finishes.

Who’s really running the show at Open Grain Woodwork? Meet Pip! 🐾

He’s an orange and white shelter cat named after fantasy royalty (Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones fans, you know who you are!), and he takes his job as Chief Shop Supervisor very seriously.

When he’s not catching lizards in the backyard or hiding from the air gun, he’s personally inspecting our latest custom builds—from our Four Roses flight trays to our walnut river tables! 🪵

4 days. 497 real beer cans. 1 massive corporate tradeshow challenge. 🛠️🍺

When the team representing Boston Beer Company reached out with an impossible deadline for their upcoming expo, they didn't just need a backdrop—they needed a full-scale structural statement that could break down and ship on a single standard pallet.

We had just about 4 days to take their design from concept to delivery. Thanks to some serious engineering foresight, 500-ish precisely placed cans, and a few long nights in the shop, we built a modular, 10ft x 8ft masterpiece that looked absolutely awesome on the show floor.

At Open Grain, we don't blink at tight corporate timelines. We engineer solutions.

Remember last week's sneak peek from inside our workshop? 🛠️ The sawdust has officially settled, and we are thrilled to finally reveal what we’ve been cooking up!

We’re taking you from the workshop floor straight to Louisville’s historic Whiskey Row. We have officially completed and installed a stunning new premium, multifunction gathering and event space for Four Roses Bourbon at 118 E. Main Street! 🌹🥃

This project was an absolute honor. The building itself dates back to 1884 when Four Roses founder Paul Jones, Jr. moved his business to this exact architectural treasure. Getting to bring modern, premium craftsmanship into a space steeped in so much bourbon history was an incredible privilege.

From a massive backlit branding wall featuring custom 3D-printed roses to precision-stacked authentic whiskey barrel pyramids and a sleek, laser-engraved mobile bar cart, every single detail was crafted to blend functionality with heritage.

Happy 4th of July!✨

What better way to kick off Independence Day weekend than by celebrating America’s native spirit and the heritage of true American craftsmanship?

The fabrication floor has been buzzing with energy this week. We are officially putting the finishing touches on a massive, multi-sensory experiential display for a world-class bourbon brand. From custom signage to a monumental barrel-stack display wall, our team is blending advanced digital precision with traditional, hard-working ingenuity.

Mark your calendars, because our final reveal blog post will drop next Friday as well, featuring a comprehensive look at the completed space, on-site installation footage, and the final architectural beauty shots.

Before our crew takes a well-deserved break tomorrow to enjoy the fireworks with family and friends, we’re pulling back the curtain on the entire process.

See how we take a project from a loose napkin sketch to historic, heritage-grade architectural fixtures in our latest blog post! 🛠️👇

Furniture is so much more than just wood and screws—it’s a collection of memories, history, and structural craftsmanship. 🛠️✨

Over the past six months, the Open Grain workshop has been buzzing with an incredible variety of furniture repair, refinishing, and restoration projects. We’ve been solving complex structural puzzles, saving heirlooms from the landfill, and helping our clients fall in love with their furniture all over again!

We just published a brand-new blog post taking you behind the scenes of some of our favorite recent projects, including:
🔹 Engineering custom maple "kickers" to eliminate a pedestal table’s top-heavy wobble.
🔹 Reconstructing an antique oak chair that suffered major structural failure.
🔹 Upcycling a bulky 1950s mahogany desk into a sleek, modern home office workstation.
🔹 Erasing the evidence on a beloved footstool that became a puppy chew toy! 🐕

Whether it’s a simple joint re-gluing or a complete creative modification, we treat every piece of furniture with the respect it deserves.
