Agathokles rose from a potter's son to tyrant of Syracuse through a bloody purge of the oligarchic council in 317 BC, killing or exiling hundreds of his political enemies to seize absolute power. A ruthless and capable commander, he fought Carthage for control of Sicily and boldly invaded North Africa. His reign made Syracuse one of the western Mediterranean’s leading powers.
