I do this all the time and it's so easy. . . want to share. It doesn't take any talent or bravery to customize something that's not exactly how you want it.
Santa was too dark, the colors too contrasty. I keep a bunch of cheap acrylic paints around for stuff like this. A little taupe and a little raw umber mixed with water fixed the problem in a few minutes. I painted over completely and then took paper towel to blot. Then I wanted the red holly berries even lighter so I stippled the colors over those. Now he's much softer and will work better. You can always wipe off if you don't like what you've done!
