This was one of my favorite projects of all time! I wanted wood garage doors but after getting a quote for over $10K, I decided to try and create them! I figured if it didn't turn out, I could just repaint them. 3 years later and I still love them. Most people are shocked when I tell them it's just paint!

🌸I was feeling an urge to deep clean all the things so I did a little research on the history of "spring cleaning" - why are we so pulled to it. Spring cleaning traditionally is so much more than just a chore. It's a tradition deeply rooted in cultures around the world, each with its unique rituals and significance.

Comment "Checklist" for a Free download to a checklist I created for myself - and read on if you're curious about some of the traditions I found.

---

🕯️In American cultures, it dates back to when homes were heated by lanterns and fire - with the emergence of spring came a tradition to clean off the layers of soot and dirt that came with the colder months.

🏠 Chinese New Year: In Chinese culture, the weeks leading up to the Lunar New Year are dedicated to deep cleaning the house to sweep away any bad luck and make way for good fortune in the coming year. Windows and doors are often adorned with red decorations, symbolizing luck and prosperity.

🧹 Japanese Oosouji: In Japan, Oosouji is a tradition observed at the end of the year to prepare for the new year. However, the concept of "spring cleaning" extends to this tradition as well, where homes and workplaces are meticulously cleaned to rid them of any impurities or bad luck.

💐 Jewish Passover: One of the earliest known references to spring cleaning is found in the Jewish tradition of Passover, which is observed annually in March or April. People remove all traces of chametz or leavened bread, which is prohibited leading up to the holiday. This ritual, called "bedikat chametz," symbolizes the removal of spiritual impurities and the renewal of faith.

🪠 Scottish New Year - Hogmanay: In Scotland, the tradition of "redding" involves cleaning the house from top to bottom before the start of the new year. This not only ensures a fresh start but also welcomes luck and prosperity into the home.

🏡 No matter where you're from, spring cleaning is a time-honored tradition that symbolizes renewal, fresh beginnings, and positivity. What are your spring cleaning traditions? I'd love to hear them! 🌷✨

These floating shelves were cut ahead of time and got installed in less than 30 minutes. Don’t overthink it! If you want a different “thickness”, you can choose to use different materials but I wanted to keep it very simple and easy using stock materials. This gave me a final shelf thickness of 2.5”

Quick tutorial below 👇🏼

---

DIY Floating Shelves Step-by-Step:

1. Prep: Select and pre-stain your materials - 1x2 and 1x3 select pine, plus 1/2" plywood.
2. Frame Construction: Secure 1x2 pine boards into the wall studs to form the shelf frame. Add a front piece for solid support.
3. For Longer Shelves: Ensure to add back and middle supports every 12 inches for stability. (My area is only 12” so I didn’t need those extra supports)
4. Assembly: Layer the frame with 1/2" plywood top and bottom coming to the very front of your frame pieces. Use a 1x3 pine board to conceal the frame seams.
5. Finishing: Use pin nails for final assembly to keep holes small and avoid filler.

🙌 Tip: Staining pieces before installation saves both time and cleanup effort.

Have you met Wally yet? He will make your life so much easier and he's on sale!

🙌 I’ve gotten into a routine with this guy and my floors have never been cleaner.

I love how I can choose individual areas or multiple areas at once to clean. He has dirt detection so if there’s a heavy dirt area, he will go back over that area!
