Functionality & Space Planning
If you are not utilizing a room in your home or don’t look forward to being in a certain space of your home, it may be that it’s not functional for you in this season of your life. Let me give you an example of this. A homeowner reached out to me to redesign their dining room. As we moved forward with the plans & vision for this space she asked if I would mind looking at their home office. Here’s the kicker. There was absolutely nothing wrong with their home office. It was fully furnished and exactly everything you’d expect a home office to be. The only problem being, they weren’t using it. The more we talked about why it wasn’t being utilized and more importantly, how it could better be utilized it became evident they needed more of a library-media room in place of a traditional office.
The irony of space planning and functionality is that there is not a one size fits all, right or wrong approach to meeting the needs of a space. Each and every room in every individual home is unique. If you find that you either don’t use a room or have a space in a constant state of disarray, most likely it’s just not functioning well for you. I promise you this, it’s nothing a little space planning can’t fix.
