To call Carrie Kiefer and Morgan Georgie close would be a serious understatement. For years it’s been Carrie & Morgan, Morgan & Carrie. The name of their design venture, Ampersand, says it all — the ampersand being the letterform that connects two formerly separate elements with a single stroke. (It’s no coinc
idence that Carrie & Morgan met in typography class). The ampersand is also historically the character with which a typographer can infuse personality and playfulness in a font, the symbol in the alphabet that gets to have a little more fun. Personality and fun—together—are what Carrie & Morgan have always shared. They studied graphic design together at The University of Kansas, roomed together during their semester abroad in England, and after graduation, were both hired by Hallmark Cards, where they worked together for almost a decade chatting over cubicle walls. For a while, during their single years, they even lived in the same apartment building, right across the hall from each other. These days, Carrie & Morgan not only work together, they live five minutes apart with their sweet (and very supportive) husbands and adorable baby boys, born six months apart. Carrie & Morgan’s closeness is reflected in their shared design aesthetic — clean and fresh, energized by shots of surprising color. Although they have different inspirations and points of departure (Morgan is the modern maven, while Carrie haunts vintage and thrift stores), they incorporate those viewpoints seamlessly for a look that’s current but not sterile, eclectic but harmonious. During their years at Hallmark Cards, Carrie & Morgan earned a reputation as the go-to designers in giftwrap, party, stationery and albums. They held multiple positions including Designer, Art Director, and Creative Strategist, designing and leading various multi-million dollar collections and accounts. Carrie & Morgan began freelancing together in 2005, formed an official partnership in 2007 and launched Ampersand in its present form in 2009. Ampersand Design is now a full-service design studio. Ampersand specializes in surface pattern design, identity design and stationery products, with clients in the home décor, fashion and baby and kids industries. Their clients include respected big names like Target, Bath & Body Works and Smilebox, as well as great small, local businesses around the country, including cafés, bakeries, photo studios and fashion boutiques. Carrie and Morgan pride themselves on their strong work ethic and constant drive to help their clients succeed. It happened like this: friends started getting married and asked Carrie & Morgan to design wedding invitations. Then friends started having children, and requesting nursery art and murals. Ampersand’s fun, modern take on design quickly became popular, and Carrie & Morgan set up virtual shop as a place to share the types of products that they want to buy themselves. What started as a small venture, Ampersand’s shop is now shipping worldwide and entering the world of wholesale. Their shop is made up of art prints for baby, kids and adults, many of which are customizable. Recently, they’ve expanded their offerings, splashing their zingy graphics onto melamine platters that work for everyone and everything: picnic sandwiches, cocktail party bites or even just to put on display.
