Have your hummingbirds started courting yet? Keep an eye out for the males and females dancing through the yard.

The males will zoom high into the air, then dive in big swooping arcs like tiny feathered roller coasters — all to impress a female watching nearby. Ouch… for a bird that weighs less than a nickel, that’s quite a performance.

And the females? They often act completely unimpressed at first. Think about that if you will… the little fellow is out there risking everything while she calmly watches from a branch like a talent show judge.

If you’re lucky enough to catch the display in the evening light, those flashing throat colors can look like living gemstones darting through the garden. Moments like that can brighten an entire day. https://instagr.am/p/DZAW-TaD5Ij/
