Sustainable Paper + Craft Handmade paper, paper goods and custom rubber stamps. Local to Kansas City, Missouri. Sustainable & Hello!

I'm Kelsey Pike, a papermaker, printmaker, and art teacher in Kansas City, Missouri. Through my business, Sustainable Paper+Craft, I create handmade paper, paper goods and custom rubber stamps. I have been in love with the obscure and tedious art form of hand papermaking since I first tried it in art school, at the Kansas City Art Institute, in 2009. Turning things like rags and raw plant fibers i

nto paper is a kind of magic! I love the sound of the water, the repetitive motions, the solitude – they put me in a meditative space. My favorite part is peeling the dried sheets and examining them – such a sense of accomplishment. Good craft is important to me and I am continuously studying, practicing and learning to make the best paper. I hope that me paper inspires others to make beautiful things with it.

Walkthrough of the February Monthly Paper Parcel
This palette is inspired by my favorite cold-weather clothes. I noticed the colors one afternoon when they were piled together- worn blues and deep greens softened by season of use, with some new, poppy brights. I wanted to translate that balance into paper, and matching these colors was a challenge and a delight. All papers are made with my Mixed-Media blend, except Speckled Beanie, which uses an EcoSketch blend with added tissue paper confetti. Paper names like Speckled beanie, Canvas snow pants and Green sweater.

Walkthrough of the January 2026 Monthly Paper Parcel. Filmed this one 3 times because each parcel is different!

From studio apprentice Moll Caffey:
This first parcel of the new calendar year is made of the remnants of the previous.

At the end of each batch, the fibers that have settled at the bottom of the slurry, those that evaded the pull of the screen, are strained from the water and saved. So, we rehydrated all of the pulp collected in the last year and created from them fresh batches – some reveal the various shades, some resemble a new, solid hue. This was an act of reflection and a process of resetting.

When we remember the experiences of the past and perceive them with new insights, it becomes possible to move forward with more intention and perspective than before; to carry our growth with us and use it to change the future. We can make something new from what has already been done, from what we already have.

Because we were working with what we already had, each set of this parcel contains a unique combination of colors. The very last sheets pulled at the studio in 2025 are a combination every bit of what remained of even the final, recycled batches. There is some poetic parallel in their own paradox: both muted and extremely colorful.

Belated walkthrough of the December 2025 collaboration with “Sunset to Moonrise” This paper collection centers a years’ worth of journeys taken. From mountain hikes in Colorado, beach time on the Maryland coast, foggy-weather neighborhood strolls, a visit to longstanding conservatory garden, lengthy visits with rock collections, many glowing sunsets in the car’s rear-view mirror, and one moonrise above the rolling prairie in the Kansas Flint Hills, each paper in this collection represents a specific time and a place. Together, these papers tell a story of finding a lasting purpose within fleeting moments

There are only 2 extras of this parcel, so if you want it you better run

Months ago, Laura Berman came by the studio at Cherry Pit Collective to visit Sustainable Paper + Craft to discuss a collaboration for the Monthly Paper Parcel. From a large binder full of swatches, Laura picked out colors, then drew some of her signature stone shapes. Kelsey turned these drawings into stencils, then used them to form paper in each color and shape per the design. These forms were pressed but not allowed to dry. When Laura returned to the studio, the shapes were arranged into a buffet where they could be peeled and stacked into compositions atop freshly pulled square sheets. These pieces were then dried, sorted by Laura and the best few were signed and editioned.

Please enjoy these snippets of the process and let us know if you have any questions!

Today is the 2 year anniversary of the release of my book, Modern Papermaking! It was quite the journey over the course of almost 2 years, with Madison, my lovely editor at C&T Publishing . Enjoy some behind the scenes pics, like one of the flat-lay attempts that didn’t make it to the cover (yes I’m standing on a ladder above the vat and dripping water into it to make ripples with one hand, camera in the other), the messssy process of making all of the color recipes, editing the final draft at a picnic, and taking cute selfies with my first advanced copy. Thanks to all who bought it and made it a success! This book is dedicated to my late mother, my father and my husband, whose support made it possible for me to pursue this obscure and ancient craft. If you still need a copy, you can get a signed one from me that includes all my love 😊inf
