We are wishing a very happy birthday to BNIM’s founding principal, Tom Nelson!

Architect, planner, practice leader, community builder, mentor, collaborator, advocate, friend; these are just a handful of words to describe Tom and the profound impact he has had on all of us at BNIM and beyond.

From the design of One Kansas City Place, the Kansas City Zoo World Gate Plaza, Bartle Hall, and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art Bloch Building, to the recently completed Kirk Family YMCA, Tom’s remarkable work as an architect and planner has spanned Kansas City’s skyline and neighborhoods, enhancing the built and natural environments of our community. By designing buildings that are both functional and beautiful, he has helped to create a sense of civic pride and connection among Kansas City residents.

Tom has positively shaped the urban fabric of Kansas City, transformed our practice and community, and inspired generations of architects and civic leaders.

It’s a joy to celebrate you Tom. Cheers to 90 years!

Stay tuned this week as we honor Tom’s original design of Temple Hall and highlight how BNIM is proudly continuing that legacy through our ongoing work on Blunt Hall, formerly known as Temple Hall, with Missouri State University.

What if the key to vibrant, sustainable cities is hidden inside the buildings we already have? 🏙️✨

Our West Bottoms Flats project featured in the Urban Land Institute’s (ULI) new report, What’s Old Is New: The Business Case for Adaptive Reuse, created in collaboration with Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF), shows how reimagining the past can shape the future.

Four historic warehouses in Kansas City’s West Bottoms have been transformed into micro-unit apartments, retail, and shared community spaces, proving that adaptive reuse can spark lasting urban revitalization.
