**We need your input!!**

Many of our former Roswell and Buford customers that live too far away to shop our Kennesaw, Marietta and Canton locations have asked about potential seed delivery. We are looking into this to see if we can make it work. Right now the tentative plan would be taking phone orders at one of our other stores, filling my suv (or possibly renting a van) and having a set meetup time at the sites of the former stores. We are not planning home deliveries due to time/schedule constraints. Customers would have to order in cases and there would be a minimum order amount. During the Fall we could do one or two meetups per month. If it’s popular, we could increase it to weekly during the busy season.

So, if you are interested in this possibility, please comment either ROSWELL or BUFORD below so we can see if there’s enough interest to make it work. You would still earn Cole’s Reward Points on purchases!

Cole’s Suet Kibbles are finally available and back in stock! Birds love these yummy, berry-flavored snacks. Mix them in with birdseed or offer them in a separate feeder along with dried mealworms, nuts and other high protein options. Birds 🩷💛 them!

I saw several dozen Common Nighthawks last night at dusk flying along the I-85 corridor in Gwinnett. I love seeing their migration every August!

🍂 Look up at dusk. Some of the birds you see are already leaving for South America.

Late August is a remarkable time for watching Common Nighthawks begin their southward migration.

Despite the name, they aren't hawks.

They're nightjars—specialized insect hunters that spend summer evenings sweeping through the sky, catching flying insects as they go.

And their migration is extraordinary.

Some travel thousands of miles south into South America, crossing much of the continent before returning the following spring.

The easiest time to spot them?

🌅 The 30–60 minutes after sunset.

Look over rooftops, open fields and ballfields for a bird with long, pointed wings and a distinctive white patch near the wingtip.

Their flight can look almost erratic—gliding, swooping and changing direction as they chase insects.

If you see one tonight, you're watching summer leave. 🍂

Our friends at BCA are doing great work with hummingbirds! If you are in Northeast Georgia, feed a lot of Ruby-throats (dozens or more at a time) and are interested in participating in their migration research, get in touch with Kyle!

With migration kicking off and surges of Ruby-throated hummingbirds showing up across the eastern US, Emma and Kyle are hard at work in the field. Emma is currently in Maine deploying a few transmitters on Rubys wrapping up their breeding season while Kyle is bouncing around the southeastern states. At least we aren’t super busy🤪

We are still looking for a few locations to band and deploy transmitters on Ruby-throats this fall. So, if you are going through a bunch of sugar water and wouldn’t mind us invading your yard for a little while, we are actively searching for hosts in northeastern KY (close to the WV border), northeastern GA, west central MS, and the greater Miami, FL areas. With a few hundred transmitters to deploy this season, we are on the move and being as efficient as we can be. However, our lives (along with hummer movement), is fluid. So if you fit the bill and are ok with last minute changes to plans, you’re the perfect hosts for us! You can email Kyle at [email protected] for more details if you’re interested and willing to help.

Over the next 20 days or so, we plan to knock out our KY, TN, and NC sites before dropping into MS, AL, and GA before our Fall banding at Fort Morgan. All of the FL sites and potentially coastal AL and MS will happen after we wrap up at Fort Morgan in October.

Hummingbirds are making their way south!

Each fall, these tiny dynamos travel thousands of miles from breeding habitats across Canada and the United States to nonbreeding grounds in Central America. Along the way, they rely on networks of flowering native plants and healthy habitat to fuel their journey.

If you want to help these little jewels on their journeys south, remember to keep your feeders clean! Use a 1:4 white sugar-to-water ratio and change the mixture every few days, especially in warmer weather. No one likes mold or ants ruining their food — hummingbirds included!

And that’s a wrap…thank you to all our Gwinnett customers for your support over the past 20 years in Buford, and 14 years in Duluth before that. The fall bird migration is in progress! Last night, there were an impressive 242 million estimated birds that started their journey south. They were flying mostly due south at about 30 mph, around 2,000 feet above the ground. The winds will be ideal for a more moderate night of migration tonight in the Great Lakes region, and there will likely be another push of birds late in the work week behind another cold front. September is the peak month for the fall bird migration, so these are just the "early birds." The Baltimore Oriole is one of many bird types starting to end their summer stay.
