Fall is the perfect time to prepare your garden for next year’s growing season. Adding amendments such as compost and peat moss in the fall gives them time to work into and enrich the soil over the winter months. Come spring, your soil will be ready to nourish your favorite edibles, perennials, shrubs and more.

A soil test is a great way to learn what your soil needs, and our knowledgeable staff can help you select the right products.

Another way to prepare your garden beds for spring is by planting a cover crop. Cover crops, such as clover and winter ryegrass, are grown to protect and enrich the soil rather than for harvesting. Available now at Flowerland, cover crops can help suppress weeds, reduce soil erosion and add nutrients and organic matter to the soil.

Stop in today and let our knowledgeable staff help you prepare your garden now so you can nurture your nature next spring!

This Friday, Saturday & Sunday only! Save BIG on tulip and daffodil bulbs, 40-count packages are just $15.99!

The soil is still warm, giving roots time to grow strong before winter arrives which makes this a great time to plant spring-flowering bulbs. Plus, doing it now means you’ll be rewarded with beautiful color when spring arrives!

Tip: When planning your garden beds, try planting bulbs in clumps or groups for bigger patches of color. You can even mix and match by grouping tulips with daffodils for a beautiful spring combination!

Adding mulch around your fall plantings not only keeps weeds down, it also helps the soil retain moisture going into cooler months. And it helps prevent “heaving” (small plants getting pushed out of the ground as the soil freezes and thaws) in the cooler months, which is especially important for newer plantings.

You never want more than 2-3 inches of mulch around your perennials, rose bushes and annuals. Although using extra mulch sounds like a great way to save time in the future, it can suffocate your plants and cause them to rot. Periodically stirring your mulch will enhance its appearance and help prevent it from compacting.

Stop by Flowerland today and browse our selection of bagged and bulk mulches. Your plants will thank you for it.

Fall is the perfect time to plant spring flowering bulbs. The soil is still warm, giving roots time to grow before winter arrives, while the bulbs receive the necessary cooling period to produce magnificent blooms in spring. And you can plant them right up until the ground freezes!

While you’re planting your bulbs, consider adding some frost-tolerant pansies, too. They’ll add instant color to your fall garden, then rebloom in spring to create a beautiful backdrop as your colorful bulbs emerge.
