Merry Christmas and Happy almost 2026! This year feels like it has flown by fast with so much going on in the world. It makes me feel the concept of “some years nothing happens, and some years decades happen.” I feel that the next year will be one of challenge and opportunity; I feel good about it.
I’m really grateful that Gabby is always so happy and good natured

Two and a half feet. That is the distance Gabrielle was able to cover with her new hemi walker before needing to sit down in the wheelchair. I was on one side and the therapist was on the other while we steadied her gait and the office receptionist was behind us with the wheelchair in case she needed to sit down right away. Unlike with the parallel bars, working with the hemi walker is a three person assist so we will need to be doing it in the therapy office until I have a suitable harness for her to utilize with our newly installed overhead rail above her parallel bars.
It is looking like the mixed martial arts gym where Baron trains is going to close. The proprietor is currently incarcerated for a parole violation, the electricity has been off for months due to a dispute with the power company, the rent is two months late, and the proprietor’s reputation has been irreparably tarnished before our small rural community on the town Facebook group for his irresponsible and distasteful personal conduct. Not wanting to put an end to the rhythm that Baron and his training partners have developed, I offered to have their core group continue their training in our former store showroom.
Between this and the removal of the front porch it is looking like reopening the showroom as a movement and meditation studio is moving up in my projected timeline. To accomplish this I need to have a new covered front porch built with a ramp and I need to convert my office into an accessible washroom. Modern windows have been ordered all around and the old oil stove could be reconnected before I have a wood stove installed. If I don’t get a loan or assistance it’ll take me about a year and a half to save what I need for those repairs before I could open it to the vetted public as “The Kerby Center for World Service.” Until then I’ll just keep doing what I’m doing

I needed to get at least one thing done for our enjoyment during this remodel and it was this ramp. Gabrielle is quite happy being able to use it independently and I had it made 5 feet wide to accommodate easy turns. With her favorite color being brown we can pick out a shade together for a winter project.
Until now we would need to take her outside and around the building to access this part of our home, but that was ok because I have been using it as a carless garage. One of the things we have stored here is Gabby’s silversmithing bench, untouched from when we closed the retail store 8 years ago. Unlike in our current studio space, I have room and adequate ventilation to set it up here. Wanting her input on Baron's instruction and experimentation I have waited on setting it up. I’ve also had too much junk in the way and no clear vision of how I want to lay out the space until now.
I’ve done about all of the prep work I can for the carpenters but there are still janitorial and organizational projects keeping me out of the office or studio. When the windows arrive I’ll need to move the packing station and Gabby’s entertainment center to the other side of the building. With everything open I’ll switch out the galvanized plumbing and add a drain for the new washer. I still have a budget for the other assorted odds and ends that need to be wrapped up but I’ll need to wait to replace the front and side porches. I have them designed in my mind, now I just need the funds to materialize them 🙂

The front porch is gone now. As with the other porch, cement and fill were placed directly against the building causing it to rot. The carpenters have a plan of attack for replacing the beams and joists while jacking up the building above them. So far it looks like they won’t have to cut through the floor to access the framing, at least for this part of the project anyway 🙂
I could be angry or I could be saddened by finding all of this damage, but I am actually grateful to have found it now before it became an immediate problem. I am however quite disappointed by the additional expense and how this will take resources away from the other projects that need to be completed in order for me to be able to use this building in my plans for service. This surprise repair must be prioritizing my need to be able to pass a motorized wheelchair through these double doors now rather than waiting 5 to 7 years down the line like how I had planned. I may not be able to afford replacing these with a power assist door right now but I may be able to wire it in for a future install.

Gabrielle was given a new wheelchair and we are able to use it now after only being able to admire it for a couple weeks 🙂 One of its tires was deflated and with their short narrow gage valve stems I needed to take it to a bike shop where it could be filled on their compressor rather than a standard racing tire pump. I’ll still need to order the safety belts and straps so she can use the lift feature without us to keep her standing but we can practice with it in the inbetween.
The chair will need some getting used to and it will need to be used on more uniform surfaces than her regular one. Gabby likes to propel herself using her feet in conjunction with the left side wheel rail and we only ever use the footrests when pushing her outside of the home. The new chair has built in foot rests that prevent her from using her feet to scoot so we will need to assist her more with mobility but on the upside it better aligns her affected foot and helps to counteract “foot drop.” Speaking of feet, I also got her some new shoes that will hopefully make wearing her AFO (ankle foot orthotic brace) a more pleasant experience.
We also tried out climbing harnesses but none of them would properly fit. I want to attach the kind of track that you’d suspend a heavy sliding door from to a ceiling beam above her parallel bars. From the track I would attach a tether so that she could use the bars more independently and with only one person to assist her. Hopefully a construction safety harness will work and I won’t have to absorb the cost of a medical one!

We returned home from yesterday’s town trip to a surprise 🙂 There was a package on our porch that appeared to be a book. Not expecting anything, in our excitement we didn’t even wait to get Gabrielle out of the car before opening it. To her delight it was a new puzzle, and not just a puzzle, a four pack of puzzles! Like the one I showed a few days ago they have 24 pieces but are oriented to seniors rather than children. She wanted to open them up right away and get started. They are a perfect level of difficulty where she is challenged enough to stay engaged and not discouraged by lack of progress. Our grocery store had a 48 piece with a uniform background color and it was too slow going for her so she wanted my help. With these new ones I don’t give her any assistance. Baron and I were just talking about getting her some new ones in 24 or 36 pieces when we place our next online shopping order. Thank you Karen
