Caswell Center Balloon Company & Garden Center The Balloon Co & Garden Center is a vocational work program for the resident who live at Caswell Center.

All profits go back into the program to purchase supplies and pay the resident's wages. The Balloon Co & Garden Center is a vocational work program at Caswell Developmental Center, a facility operated by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.

Caswell Developmental Center Partners with Lenoir County SPCA to Help Dogs Find Homes


DHHS' Caswell Developmental Center recently launched an inspiring partnership with Lenior County SPCA called Art for Adoptions. This unique program offers residents a paid opportunity to use their artistic talents to help dogs find loving homes. Caswell residents create a one-of-a-kind drawing of a dog available for adoption. These works of art are shared to promote the adoption, and when the dog finds its forever home, the adopter receives the original piece as a keepsake.

Local small businesses have already stepped up to sponsor adoption fees, making this a true community effort. The adopter gets a beautiful piece of art, the dog gets a family, and the residents at the Caswell Developmental Center are paid for their contributions to a cause that matters to them. This opportunity reflects Caswell’s meaningful approach to the informed decision-making process when exploring employment that matters most to the resident and represents Caswell's strong partnerships with local communities in support of people with disabilities.

Art for Adoptions grew out of a broader effort to create more meaningful work opportunities for people living in North Carolina's state developmental centers. In recent years, the centers have focused on creating individualized paid opportunities, leading to partnerships such as this one. These efforts demonstrate DHHS' Division of State Operated Healthcare Facilities' commitment to using creativity and collaboration to open doors, empower individuals and strengthen communities.

“Art for Adoptions has given harder-to-place animals the attention they deserve through residents’ artwork. This partnership has introduced new people to our shelter, raised community awareness and helped more animals find loving homes," said Tiffinie Jarman, Lenoir County SPCA Rescue Coordinator. “This partnership builds connections at every level — for the animals, the adopters and the residents whose artwork tells each animal’s story and brings them closer to a forever home."

The program has already made a big impact, but there’s room to grow. Lenoir County SPCA is currently seeking new sponsors to help cover adoption fees and expand the reach of Art for Adoptions. Sponsors not only support local animal rescue efforts but also help provide residents with opportunities to showcase their talents and engage in purposeful work.
