The homeowner thinks, “We have great taste, this remodel will be easy”. They did not, it turns out, have opinions on Schluter.

Every renovation starts the same way: you already know what you want. The tile, the layout, the light fixtures — decided. Easy.

Then construction starts, and “we know what we want” turns out to be the first of about two thousand decisions.

Hiring a designer means having the questions answered before they’re even asked.

A house doesn’t have to choose between beautiful and lived-in.

We’ve never designed a room too precious to actually sit in because if the dog can’t get on the sofa and nobody can do homework at the island, it’s not finished. It’s just staged.

Good design is what’s underneath the pretty photo: a drawer exactly where your hand already reaches for it, lighting that doesn’t punish you at 7 a.m., a laundry room that stops being where good intentions go to die, materials that survive a birthday party and still look better next year than they do today.

None of that happens by accident. Most of it is invisible once it’s done right… which might be the whole point.

Walnut cabinetry. Oversized deep blue tile. Terrazzo floors. Alabaster lighting. Brass details.

On paper, that’s a lot of personalities sharing one bathroom. Somehow, they all get along beautifully.

For this Mercer Island remodel, we leaned into the home’s mid-century roots without turning the space into a time capsule. Warm walnut brings the richness, glossy blue shower tile adds the drama, terrazzo keeps things playful, and alabaster + brass soften the whole mix.

The result feels distinctly mid-century, but fresh, layered and designed for the way we live today.

And yes, I’d absolutely choose the blue tile again. 💙

People don’t believe me when I tell them:

1.The most expensive mistake in your remodel usually happens before construction even starts.

It’s a bad floor plan.
You can change tile, lighting or paint later. Moving walls, plumbing and cabinetry after construction starts is a much more expensive lesson. Good design starts with how the space functions, not what it looks like.

2. Your contractor and your interior designer do not have the same job.

And you want both of them doing what they do best.
Your contractor figures out how to build it beautifully. Your designer makes sure you’re building the right thing in the first place. The best projects happen when those two roles work together, not when one is expected to replace the other.

3. I can usually spot the thing you’ll regret before you’ve even ordered it.

Because I’ve already seen what happens next.
The chair that technically fits but blocks circulation. The beautiful stone that can’t handle your family’s actual life. The trendy finish you’ll want to replace in three years. Experience isn’t just knowing what looks good. It’s knowing what happens after you live with it.

4. Your Pinterest board may actually be making your remodel harder.

Because you don’t actually want 47 different kitchens. Usually there’s a common thread hiding in all those saved images: warm wood, dramatic stone, interesting lighting, a certain color palette. My job isn’t to recreate the pictures. It’s to figure out why you saved them and translate that into a home that feels like you.

5. The thing everyone notices first in a beautifully designed room usually isn’t the thing you spent the most money on.

It’s how the room feels.
Good proportions. Natural light. Thoughtful sightlines. Materials that relate to one another. A room can have a very expensive sofa and still fall flat. Great design is when you can’t immediately identify why the room works. It just does.

Not everything in a remodel needs to be new. Sometimes the most meaningful pieces are the ones that already belong to the family.

These chairs have been passed down through multiple women in one family, carrying decades of stories with them.

While the bones, lines, and classic style were fantastic, the fabric had become worn and dated. Rather than replacing them, we reimagined the chairs with a subtle blue textured fabric and bold velvet accents that feel fresh while still honoring their history.

Now these heirloom chairs are ready to be enjoyed by the next generation. ♻️💙
