Our hearts at Southern Roots are heavy for the families, friends, and especially the children whose lives have been forever changed by this unimaginable loss in our community.

Right now, let’s choose compassion over curiosity.

Respect the families. Respect the children. Give them space to grieve and heal. Let the authorities do their work, and let the facts come from those responsible for finding them, not rumors or speculation.

Most importantly, show up for them. Pray. Help when there is a need. Check in when the attention fades. Be there in the days that follow.

A small town with a big heart isn’t measured by how quickly news travels. It’s measured by how we care for our own when they need us most.

Protect their privacy. Give them grace. Let love be louder than the noise. 🤍🕊️

Our world has came crashing down and I don’t have the words to express the pain we are all feeling. We appreciate everyone that has reached out.

The children will be with us. At this time they do not have access to any of their personal things.

Hen on Nest glass has been loved and collected for generations, and one of the things we love most is how many different colors, styles, makers, and eras are out there!

But here’s something important to know when shopping for them:

Not every Hen on Nest is vintage or antique—and that’s perfectly okay! 🤍

There are vintage pieces, reproductions, and newer vintage-inspired pieces available today. A newer piece isn’t automatically “fake” simply because it wasn’t made decades ago. What matters is knowing what you’re purchasing and having it represented and priced honestly for what it is.

At Southern Roots, transparency matters to us.

🐔 If we know a piece is vintage, we’ll tell you.
🐔 If it’s a newer reproduction or vintage-inspired piece, we’ll tell you that too.
🐔 We do not intentionally represent newer pieces as antique or vintage collectibles simply to increase their value.

You’ll find newer Hen on Nest pieces in shops right alongside genuine vintage ones—and there’s nothing wrong with loving either!

Some collectors hunt specific makers, molds, colors, or eras. Some collect vintage exclusively. And some just see a gorgeous Hen on Nest and think…

“Yep. That chicken is coming home with me.” 😂🐔

And honestly? We think they’re pretty whether they’re 50+ years old or freshly made.

That’s the fun of collecting. Know what you’re buying, know what you’re paying for, and collect what YOU love. 🤍

🚨 Sticky fingers have NO room at Southern Roots! 🚨

We hate that this is even a post we have to make, but we need to address something.

Stealing from a small business is NOT harmless.

Taking merchandise without paying for it is theft. Switching, removing, or altering price tags in an attempt to pay a lower price is also unacceptable.

We are aware of merchandise belonging to Southern Roots that is now missing, and the value involved is significant.

We know what was taken. We know how it was taken. And we know more about today’s incident than you may realize.

We’re giving the persons responsible an opportunity to do the right thing and return the merchandise immediately.

If it isn’t returned, we’re prepared to turn the information and documentation we have over to law enforcement and allow them to handle the matter from there.

What happens next is your choice.

Parents, PLEASE talk to your children, teens, and young adults about their choices when visiting local businesses. One stupid decision can have consequences that follow them far longer than whatever they thought they were gaining in the moment. No merchandise is worth jeopardizing their future.

Southern Roots utilizes security cameras and other loss-prevention measures throughout our store. We take security seriously—not only for our own inventory, but because our vendors trust us with theirs.

Small businesses work incredibly hard to keep their doors open. When someone steals or intentionally changes a price tag, it doesn’t hurt some faceless corporation. It directly affects real people, real families, and local small businesses.

So please: don’t steal. Don’t switch tags. Don’t remove tags.

Shop small. Support small. Respect small businesses. 🤍

And if you left Southern Roots with merchandise that doesn’t belong to you, return it immediately.

📣 NEW STORE HOURS!

After looking at our foot traffic and what makes the most sense for Southern Roots, we’ve decided to make a small change to our weekly hours.

🌿 Wednesday–Friday | 10 AM–6 PM
🌿 Saturday | 10 AM–3 PM
Closed Sunday–Tuesday

Tuesdays have consistently been one of our slower days, so for now, we’re going to use that time to better balance our full-time jobs, the store, and most importantly, time at home with our families. 🤍

That doesn’t mean these are the only times you can shop with us! If you need to come by outside of our regular business hours, feel free to send us a message or give us a call. If we’re able to accommodate you, we absolutely will! 🌿

As our little shop continues to grow, we’ll keep adjusting our hours based on what works best for our customers and our community.

We truly believe our downtown square can thrive again, but it takes all of us choosing to shop, eat, visit, and support local when we can. Every person who walks through the door of a small business makes a difference.

So come see us Wednesday through Saturday, bring a friend, explore the square, and show some love to your local businesses! 🛍️🌿

Kosciusko, can we have an honest conversation? 🤍🌿

We opened Southern Roots because we genuinely believe in downtown Kosciusko and what our square can become. We want full storefronts, busy sidewalks and local businesses succeeding together. We’ve all said it. It’s sad to see it dry up and wither away.

But July and August have been exceptionally slow for us, and today really put that into perspective.

We’ve watched neighboring businesses packed today—and we LOVE seeing that. We WANT every local business to be busy and successful.

At the same time, we haven’t had one person walk through our doors today.

Seeing other businesses busy doesn’t make us bitter, it actually gives us hope. It tells us people ARE out, people ARE shopping and people ARE supporting local.

So instead of sitting here wondering, we’re asking: What are we missing?

Is it our hours? Merchandise? Pricing? Marketing? Is there something you’d like us to carry or offer? What would actually make you walk through our doors?

We’re at a point where we have to pay close attention to what is working, what isn’t, and what Southern Roots needs to be sustainable long-term. We don’t want sympathy, we want honest, useful feedback.

And especially, when would you ACTUALLY shop?

Southern Roots is owned by two business partners who both work full-time jobs outside of the store. We each also have our own children, families and responsibilities.

We’re willing to adjust our hours when there’s genuine demand, but we can’t sacrifice every evening and every weekend away from our individual families simply hoping someone might walk through the door.

One late evening a week? Friday nights? Later Saturdays? Occasional evening events?

Tell us what you’d actually show up for.

There’s also an elephant in the room.
We’ve had customers come through our doors and repeat false information and negative things that have been said about our business. We’re not naming names or fighting on Facebook, but if we genuinely want Kosciusko to grow, some of the gossip, grudges and unnecessary small-town drama have to stop.

We don’t all have to be friends. We don’t have to agree on everything. Heck, we don’t even have to like each other. 😂

Someone else’s success is not your failure.

Whatever anyone may personally think about either of us should NEVER affect the incredible vendors inside Southern Roots.

Our vendors have been AMAZING. 🤍

They’ve invested their own money, time and hard work into their businesses and trusted us with a place to grow.

They deserve to succeed.

Vendors, please don’t mistake our transparency for us losing hope. We’re asking these questions because we’re working to make Southern Roots stronger for ALL of us.

We’re listening. We’re evaluating. We’re looking for ways to increase foot traffic and get more people through those doors to discover what YOU have to offer.

A thriving downtown can’t be built by business owners alone.

Shop local. Eat local. Visit somewhere you’ve never been. Share a post. Recommend a business. Bring a friend downtown.

A $10 purchase matters. A $20 purchase matters. A Facebook share or a good word matters.

Seeing neighboring businesses packed today proves something important:

Kosciusko CAN support local businesses.

Now we’re asking our community to help us figure out how Southern Roots can better earn that support, too.
