As the seasons change, make sure your fireplace is ready to warm your home efficiently and safely. Here’s a simple maintenance checklist for both wood-burning and gas fireplaces:

✔️ Test and operate the damper to make sure it opens and closes smoothly, controlling airflow effectively.
✔️ For wood burning fireplaces clean the firebox after each use by safely disposing of ashes, and check for cracks or damage to the inner and exterior parts of the appliance that need repair.
✔️ Check carbon monoxide detectors near your fireplace for added safety.
✔️ Schedule annual professional inspections and chimney sweeps to catch and address issues early.

Regular care keeps your fireplace efficient, safe, and ready for cozy nights ahead! 🔥🏡

Why both matter:
🔥 Smoke alarms detect smoke, alerting you quickly to evacuate. Smoke alarms are required outside of every sleeping area, inside each individual sleeping area, and at least one on every floor of the residence.
💨 CO detectors sense dangerous carbon monoxide gas from fuel-burning appliances, like stoves, furnaces, or fireplaces — which you can’t see or smell. Carbon Monoxide detectors are required outside of all sleeping areas.

Key tips:
✅ Install smoke alarms and CO detectors on every level of your home, especially near sleeping areas.
✅ Test alarms monthly and replace batteries yearly or as needed.
✅ Choose detectors certified to current safety standards (UL 217 or UL 268 for smoke alarms, UL 2034 for CO alarms).
✅ Never replace smoke alarms with CO alarms — they serve different, vital roles.

Did you know that millions of homes across America treasure their fireplaces not just for ambiance but as a reliable heating source? As temperatures drop, it's important to get your fireplace or wood stove checked, cleaned, and ready for the season.

Here are some simple tips to enjoy your fireplace safely this month and beyond:
✅ Schedule an annual inspection and service
✅ Keep the area around your fireplace clear of flammable items
✅ Use a fireplace screen or safety barrier, especially if children and/or pets are nearby
✅ Install carbon monoxide and smoke detectors throughout your home and don't forget to test them regularly
✅ Never leave a fire unattended and ensure doors/dampers are properly open or closed when needed

🔥 What You Need to Know About Creosote & Soot Buildup in Your Fireplace 🔥

Creosote is a sticky, tar-like substance that can also be flaky or puffy/ It forms inside your fireplace and chimney as a result of burning wood. It can build up quickly over time, especially if you burn unseasoned wood or your fireplace has poor ventilation. Sooting is a chalky black substance that forms in your fireplace when there is improper or incomplete combustion in a gas fireplace.

Why is creosote dangerous?
- It narrows your flue, restricting airflow and causing your fire to burn inefficiently — which actually leads to more creosote.
- Creosote is highly flammable; excessive buildup can ignite and cause dangerous chimney fires that spread rapidly and could damage your home.
- It can block proper venting, leading to dangerous gases like carbon monoxide building up inside your home, posing serious health risks.
- Creosote contains toxic chemicals and strong odors that can irritate your eyes and respiratory system.

🔥 Why Does My Fireplace Glass Fog Up? 🔥

Foggy fireplace glass is a common issue caused by moisture condensation when warm air inside meets the cooler glass surface. Vaporization is a result of combustion which can also be a cause of condensation on the glass. This happens especially when you first start the fire as the glass heats up. Allowing your fireplace to gradually heat up can help reduce the condensation on the glass. Leaving the pilot flame burning can also reduce condensation on startup of the fireplace.
