Ever wonder what a landscaper does before she starts her day? My husband has been asking for a Sugar Maple since we moved into our house. I told him he could have one if he helped plant it…. he had no idea what he was getting into!!😂🤣

I wrote this book to educate children about the Driftless Area and to give them pride and wonder in the beautiful place in which they live. The ultimate goal of educating the next generation is not merely to transmit knowledge but to inspire action. Knowledge without agency can lead to despair, especially when discussing global issues like climate change. However, when children participate in hands-on stewardship whether it be at school or with their families—planting gardens and prairies, monitoring local species, or cleaning up neighborhood streams—they begin to recognize their capacity to contribute meaningfully to their communities, which fosters an early land ethic, a term famously coined by Driftless resident Aldo Leopold. By providing the tools to discern fact from disinformation, we ensure that the environmentalists of tomorrow are not just passionate, but also strategically equipped to lead the transition toward a circular economy and sustainable world. These children learn that sustainability isn't a buzzword; it is a practice.

Tool Tips: Scuffle Hoe
A scuffle hoe is a lightweight garden tool with a V-shaped or stirrup-shaped blade that cuts w**ds just below the soil surface using a back-and-forth push-pull motion, making it excellent for quickly clearing young w**ds in large areas or around plants without bending over. Also known as action hoes, Dutch hoes, or hula hoes, these hoes save time and effort by slicing w**ds at their roots, often leaving them to decompose back into the soil as mulch.

We can help! September is a good time to get your area ready for next summers planting. We use a green method called “sheet” mulching”. It is a sustainable, no dig gardening technique that uses layers of biodegradable cardboard to smother w**ds, retain soil moisture and improve soil health. It is an effective organic w**d barrier. In the spring, the area is mainly w**d free and ready to be planted with native prairie plants.

First Author read aloud at the Onalaska Library! I’m not sure who had more fun- me or the kids😊 Such an amazing library and the kids were wonderful listeners and very curious. I offered 8 science exploration stations following the reading.

Provide a critical, late-season food source for bees, butterflies, and migrating Monarchs, helping them fuel up for winter hibernation or migration when other nectar sources are scarce. Asters offer open flower heads that make nectar and pollen easily accessible.
