Nothing transforms a room like lighting, and it's one of the most overlooked parts of design. 💡

At Willetts Design, every lighting plan layers three types of light:
🕯️ Ambient: general illumination for the whole room
📖 Task: focused light for reading, cooking, working
🖼️ Accent: highlighting architecture, art, and the details worth noticing

That layering is what creates depth and mood that a single overhead fixture never could.
We also think about color temperature, beam angle, and dimming, so a space can feel bright for morning coffee, soft for afternoon quiet, and dramatic for evening entertaining, all in the same room. ✨

And in a desert climate especially, how you manage natural light through window treatments and finishes matters just as much as what happens after sunset.
Great lighting is almost invisible. You don't notice the fixtures, you just notice how good everything looks and feels.

What's a room that felt completely different to you once the lighting changed?

There's a whole world of furniture and fabric most people never see.

Trade-only showrooms don't sell directly to the public; they exist exclusively for design professionals. That means access to American, European and Asian makers, exclusive fabric collections, and limited-production pieces you simply can't buy on your own.

Thomas Lavin, principal of the LA to-the-trade showroom that bears his name, has worked alongside Dorothy for years. He describes her as someone who marries fine art with furniture, taking a client's vision from thought to ex*****on.

🎨 When something doesn't exist yet, we design it. A custom sofa built to your exact space. A dining table sized for how you really entertain. We manage every detail, fabric, frame, finish, hardware, and inspect each piece before it ever reaches your home.

This kind of access often saves more than it costs, through trade pricing and mistakes avoided before they happen. ✨

Has a great vendor or showroom relationship ever changed the outcome of a project for you?

When you hire an interior designer, you're not just hiring someone to pick furniture and paint colors. 🏡

You're bringing on a strategic partner who manages dozens of moving parts at once, so your project actually comes together the way it was designed to.
Here's what that partnership looks like in practice:

📅 We build detailed timelines. Architectural work happens before finishes, finishes before furniture, furniture before final styling; every phase in the right order.

🤝 We're your single point of contact. Contractors, electricians, plumbers, tile installers, delivery teams; one team keeping everyone aligned, so nothing falls through the cracks.

💰 We track budgets as we go. Flagging issues early and pivoting quickly when the unexpected happens, because it always does.

Projects led by a real design partner are far more likely to finish on time and on budget than projects managed piecemeal. ✨

What worries you more about a big renovation: the design decisions, or everything it takes to actually execute them?

Ever wonder what you're actually paying for when you hire an interior designer? 🏡
We've published a complete guide breaking down what full-service interior design really includes, and it's more than most people expect.

A few things that often surprise people:
🛋️ It's not just furniture and paint. It's space planning, architectural coordination, custom furniture design, and trade-only access to resources you can't get on your own.

💡 Lighting is its own discipline. Layered, technical, and one of the most transformative elements in a home, and one of the most overlooked.

📋 The support doesn't end at installation. We keep detailed records of every paint, fabric, and material specified, so questions years later have easy answers.
Full-service design is an integrated process, not a checklist. Each piece depends on the others. ✨

Most designers are wonderful professionals. But knowing the red flags protects you. 🚩

At Willetts Design, we think a good consultation reveals as much by what doesn’t happen as by what does. Watch for these flags:

⏰ Pressure to commit on the spot. A big decision deserves reflection. Urgency usually signals the designer’s need, not confidence in the work.

💸 Vague pricing. If they can’t or won’t explain how fees work, be cautious. You deserve clarity about your investment and what it covers.

🗣️ Talking more than listening. If it’s a monologue about awards and famous clients, the focus is in the wrong place. The conversation should be about you.

🙄 Dismissing your ideas. Or steering you away from a costly mistake? That’s their job. Making you feel foolish? Not okay.

📅 Big promises before understanding scope. Responsible designers give ranges and explain variables. Guarantees made too early rarely hold up.

This isn’t about suspicion. The tone of a first meeting is usually an honest preview of the whole relationship. Calm, clear, unhurried isn’t just nicer, it’s more reliable. Trust your instincts; if something feels off, it usually is. ✨
Looking back, what was the clearest early sign a professional relationship was, or wasn’t, going to work?

Your consultation is over. Now what? 📝

At Willetts Design, we don’t ask you to decide in the room. A big project deserves time to think, and a designer confident in their work won’t rush you.

Here’s what usually comes next:
📄 A proposal meeting is scheduled. Within a few days: a written outline of scope, fees, timeline, and next steps. It should reflect the conversation you had, clear, detailed, no ambiguity.

🔍 Read it carefully. Does it capture what you discussed? Is the scope defined? Do you understand what’s included? Ask questions now, good designers welcome them.

⏳ Take your time. Weigh the work, the process, the fee, and your gut feeling about the partnership. Comparing firms? Look at fit and judgment, not just price. The cheapest proposal and the right one are rarely the same.

🚪 Decide when you’re ready. If the timing isn’t right, that’s okay, the door stays open. ✨

What gives you the most confidence in starting a big project: the plan, the people, or the process?

Talent matters. But it’s not the whole picture. 🤝

You’ll work closely with your designer for months. So, beyond the portfolio, the consultation is where you feel out something harder to measure: can you actually build with this person?

At Willetts Design, we think fit goes both ways. Pay attention to how a designer listens, how clearly they explain things, and how they treat your ideas, a good one steers you away from costly mistakes without ever making you feel silly. And trust your gut: sometimes the most impressive designer just doesn’t feel right, and that’s real information.

But the truest test of fit isn’t the first meeting, it’s whether a client would do it all again. 💫

Meet Julie. We worked with her through a three-phase remodel of her Indian Wells home, here’s what she had to say. 👇
She calls Dorothy “a pleasure to work with,” says Dorothy would be “the first person I’d call” next time, and has already sent several friends our way.
That’s what the right fit looks like: a relationship, not just a room.

Want to get the most out of your design consultation? It starts before you sit down. 📋
At Willetts Design, a little preparation turns a good first meeting into a great one. Here’s what to bring:

🖼️ Visual inspiration. Images of spaces you love, Pinterest, screenshots, magazine tears. Don’t worry about explaining why; patterns reveal your taste better than words. Bonus: images of what you don’t want.

📐 Photos of your current space. Wide shots and detail shots. Architectural features, light, anything you want to keep. Floor plans help if you have them.

💡 A realistic investment range. Not an exact number, a range. It lets us propose ideas that actually fit your project instead of guessing.

📝 Your priorities and frustrations. What isn’t working? What do you avoid because it doesn’t function? How do you really use each room? This shapes design as much as style does.

You don’t need contracts, swatches, or final decisions, that all comes later. This first meeting is about laying a foundation. The more you bring, the better we can interpret your vision. ✨

What space do you keep coming back to when you picture your home reimagined?
